Việt NamViệt Nam26/03/2025

To increase the value of avocado and durian products, Dak Nong people have been guided to choose varieties and concentrated production areas; at the same time, build a production model following VietGAP to promote potential, strengths, and increase income for growers.

Durian products from the VietGAP standard model have good appearance and quality, and are well received by the market. Durian products from the VietGAP standard model have good appearance and quality, and are well received by the market.

In 2024, from the central agricultural extension fund, the Dak Nong Provincial Agricultural Extension and Forestry Seed Center (Agricultural Extension Center) will implement the model of "Producing fruit trees according to VietGAP standards to serve the development of raw material areas associated with consumption linkages in some Central Highlands provinces".

The program was implemented on an area of 25 hectares for 25 households in Dak Nong. Of which, the avocado intensive farming model according to VietGAP was implemented in Quang Tam commune, Dak Buk So (Tuy Duc district) for 10 households, on an area of 10 hectares; the durian intensive farming model according to VietGAP in Truong Xuan commune (Dak Song district) for 15 participating households, on an area of 15 hectares.

Having grown durian for many years, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Hai's family in Truong Xuan commune, Dak Song district has always faced difficulties due to lack of experience in cultivation techniques; especially the durian often falls off at the young fruit stage, the final yield is not achieved and the selling price to the market is also difficult. At the end of 2023, Ms. Hai's family received support from the Dak Nong Agricultural Extension Center to take care of 5 sao/2 ha of durian according to VietGAP standards.

When participating in the model, Ms. Hai was guided and trained by the center in many knowledge about durian production techniques according to VietGAP standards such as weed management to maintain humidity, regulate temperature and humidity during the durian flowering stage; measures to use fertilizers and pesticides properly; techniques for flowering, pruning young fruit... so after one season, the durian garden has given results beyond expectations.

Ms. Hai said that thanks to proper care, her family's durian garden has a very high fruit set rate. The stage of classifying and removing young fruit is also very important, helping the quality and appearance of the durian when harvested to have a higher rate of meeting standards, making it more accepted by the market.

In the last durian crop, the family's garden yielded over 15 tons, an increase of 1.5-2 tons compared to previous years. The percentage of grade 1 durian was higher, the selling price was higher, especially the durian area cultivated according to VietGAP standards.

Mr. Dang Quang Minh's family in Dak Buk So commune, Tuy Duc district was selected by the Dak Nong Agricultural Extension Center to build a model of producing 5 sao of avocado according to VietGAP standards/2 ha of production land. Compared to traditional avocado production, when switching to growing avocado according to VietGAP standards, Mr. Minh was still confused about the process of using fertilizers, pesticides, harvesting process, how to preserve avocado after harvest...

The center sent technical staff to provide direct and specific guidance; and also provided online consultation when needed, especially in the initial stages of model building. Thanks to that, Mr. Minh quickly mastered the new production process. Along with technical guidance, when building the model, people were also supported with fertilizers suitable for crops and production areas.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thao, Head of Training and Transfer Department, Dak Nong Agricultural Extension Center, said that the team of technical staff regularly follows the model, monitors and guides participating households to strictly follow the technical process of care and disease prevention, so the garden grows and develops well with few pests and diseases.

Compared to conventional production, the productivity of the models is 10% higher, the economic efficiency is 15%. Specifically, durian productivity reaches 15 tons/ha, avocado productivity reaches 11.55 tons/ha. With the selling price of durian at the time of 65,000 VND/kg, the profit after deducting costs is more than 644 million VND/ha, 31% higher than conventional production. The avocado model has a profit of over 68 million VND/ha. The models are granted traceability stamps, and are linked to sign contracts with fruit purchasing units.
