In a statement, Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari stressed: "If the Iranian regime makes the mistake of initiating a new round of escalation, we will be forced to respond. Our message is clear: Anyone who threatens the State of Israel and seeks to push the region into a more tense situation will pay a heavy price."
Meanwhile, Iran's Air Defense Force confirmed on the same day that Israel had attacked several military bases in Tehran and other cities.
According to Iran's statement, the attack targeted "military centers in Tehran, Khuzestan and Ilam provinces", but "caused only limited damage" because it was stopped.
* CNN quoted a well-informed source as saying that Israel's attack campaign in response to Iran ended after three airstrikes lasting about four hours.
The exact targets and extent of damage caused by Israel remain unclear although various sources say Israel targeted military targets, including Iranian missile factories.
Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency quoted sources as saying that Iran was ready to respond to Israel. "Israel will certainly face a corresponding response to any of its actions," the source said.
* Meanwhile, according to a statement from the US Department of Defense, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant about US forces in the region being put on high alert amid Israel's campaign to attack Iran.
"Secretary Austin today spoke with Secretary Gallant about receiving an update on the Israeli Defense Forces' offensive against military targets in Iran. Secretary Austin affirmed the United States' unwavering commitment to the security and self-defense of the Jewish State. He also emphasized the United States' enhanced military posture to protect American personnel, Israel, and our regional partners from Iranian threats," the statement said.
On the same day, US National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett called on Iran to stop attacking Israel to end the spiral of violence after Israel retaliated with airstrikes against the Islamic Republic.
