Evidence of the revolutionary movement

Hoi An was a fierce battlefield during the resistance wars against invaders. That has made this land still retain a network of relics on the theme of revolutionary war with a large number, quite dense distribution and rich types.

Notable among these are the Duc An house relic marking the birth of the Vietnam Revolutionary Youth Association in Hoi An in October 1927; the One Pine Tree relic marking the establishment of the Quang Nam Provincial Party Committee on the evening of March 28, 1930; the Huynh Du house relic marking the meeting of the Hoi An Uprising Committee on August 17, 1945, deciding the time for the General Uprising to seize power in Hoi An during the August Revolution in 1945...

In particular, there are 3 prisons built by colonialists and imperialists in Hoi An, existing consecutively: Faifo Prison from the beginning of the 20th century to 1945, Thong Dang Prison from 1947 - 1959, Hoi An Prison from 1960 - 1975.

These are three large provincial prisons, in each prison, the enemy imprisoned thousands of cadres, soldiers, and patriots in Quang Nam province and several other provinces; among them, many comrades later became leaders of the country, high-ranking officials of the Central Committee, generals of the Vietnam People's Army, outstanding leaders of Quang Nam - Da Nang and other localities.

Mr. Quang Van Quy - Deputy Director of Hoi An Heritage Management and Conservation Center said that the outstanding feature of the revolutionary relics in Hoi An is that they date back almost throughout and vividly reflect the history of Hoi An Party Committee since the campaign to establish the Party organization until the Party was born, leading the struggle through two resistance wars against French colonialism and American imperialism.

The event associated with some revolutionary relics in Hoi An not only reflects the local revolutionary movement but also has an influence on the revolutionary movement of the region and the country.

Passing the torch to the younger generation

Of the approximately 70 revolutionary historical relics in Hoi An, 14 have been ranked as provincial relics, and one relic is submitting its dossier for the Provincial People's Committee to consider recognition in the coming time.

The prison system during the colonial and imperial periods has also been proposed to the provincial specialized agency to prepare a dossier to propose to the competent authority for national ranking. It can be said that this is an important heritage part that constitutes the overall value of Hoi An's cultural heritage.

Researcher Tran Van An - Head of the Quang Nam Folk Arts Association said that currently, historical relics in Hoi An are all zoned for protection, marked with markers, and erected with steles, and are highly appreciated by many units and localities.

“In fact, from a social perspective, most students who are passionate about approaching revolutionary historical sites think very positively, study and work responsibly. Therefore, it is necessary to widely spread revolutionary tradition education to all students. From gratitude to the previous generation, students will understand and be grateful to their families, and live responsibly towards society,” said Mr. Tran Van An.

Ms. Phan Thi Thanh Ly - History teacher, Nguyen Duy Hieu Secondary School (Hoi An City) said that in addition to teaching historical knowledge to ensure quality and capacity, she has flexibly integrated traditional education through relics into teaching lessons.

“For example, expanding the introduction to students about the Nghia Hoi organization and the biography of patriot Nguyen Duy Hieu (from Hoi An city) - a leader in the Can Vuong movement in Quang Nam when learning about some uprisings in the Can Vuong movement in Quang Nam in the years 1885 - 1896; further explaining about the establishment of the Quang Nam Provincial Party Committee associated with the relic of Cay Thong Mot (Tan An ward, Hoi An city) when learning about the Conference to establish the Communist Party of Vietnam; introducing images of Thong Dang prison (Cam Pho ward) associated with the activity of learning about the strategic offensive in the Winter - Spring of 1953 - 1954)…” - Ms. Thanh Ly shared.

According to the Hoi An Center for Cultural Heritage Management and Conservation, it is necessary to increase the organization of extracurricular activities for students to study, visit and experience.

At the same time, develop and implement a plan to cooperate with the Management Board of Hoa Lo Prison, Da Lat Children's Prison, Con Dao Prison... to organize specialized exhibitions, propaganda, promotion, exchange, and development cooperation; connect tourist attractions such as Hoi An Prison - Cay Thong Mot - Bay Mau Coconut Forest... to diversify the form of traditional education for the younger generation through revolutionary historical relics.

With the characteristics of a tourist city, in recent times, a number of historical revolutionary relics in Hoi An have also attracted the attention and research of many tourists, such as: Bay Mau Coconut Forest relic, Cao Hong Lanh comrade memorial house at Duc An house relic, Hoi An prison... Currently, there are 2 key projects to restore and embellish the Bay Mau Coconut Forest relic and Cay Thong Mot relic, which have had policies and are promoting procedures for implementation in the coming time.
