Heads of state, heads of government, as well as international humanitarian and relief organizations will attend the conference at the invitation of King Abdullah II of Jordan, President of Egypt Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The conference was held to seek ways to strengthen the international community's response to the humanitarian disaster that is besetting the lives of some 2.3 million Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, as well as to ensure a coordinated collective response to address the humanitarian situation in this Mediterranean strip of land.

In addition, the conference also aims to identify measures and procedures to effectively address the needs of the people of Gaza.

According to statistics, since the Hamas-Israel conflict broke out on October 7, 2023, more than 36,280 Palestinians have been killed and more than 80,000 others injured, mostly women and children. Israel's blockade of most food, water and fuel supplies to Gaza has caused a near-famine situation in the strip.

Israel's ground offensive on the city of Rafah since early last month has further aggravated humanitarian conditions in Gaza.

More than 800,000 of Rafah’s estimated 1.3 million refugees remain displaced. Meanwhile, aid deliveries into Rafah and Gaza have been severely curtailed since the closure of the Rafah-Egypt border crossing due to Israeli attacks. No trucks carrying humanitarian aid have crossed the border into Gaza since early May.

* In the complicated situation of war and humanitarian crisis in Gaza, head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) Philippe Lazzarini said that Israel "needs to end its campaign against this agency".

In an article published in the New York Times on May 31, Mr. Lazzarini expressed: “The war in the Gaza Strip has caused a blatant disregard for the mission of the United Nations, including unjustified attacks on its staff, facilities and operations. These attacks must stop and the world must act to hold those responsible accountable.”

UNRWA, which coordinates most aid operations in the Gaza Strip, has been in crisis since the beginning of this year after Israel accused several of its staff in Gaza of involvement in a Hamas attack last October. Israel’s accusations led to several governments, including top donor the United States, abruptly suspending funding to UNRWA, threatening efforts to deliver aid to Gaza.

An independent review of UNRWA led by former French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna later found a number of “neutrality-related issues”, but said Israel had yet to provide evidence to back up its allegations.

According to Mr. Lazzarini, Israeli officials not only threaten the work of UNRWA staff and missions, but also delegitimize the agency, by describing it as a terrorist organization that fosters extremism and “labeling” UN leaders as terrorists in collusion with Hamas.

“The campaign against UNRWA has spread to East Jerusalem, where protests outside the agency’s headquarters have become common in recent months and increasingly dangerous, with at least two arson attacks,” he said.

Last week, UNRWA suspended food distribution in the southern Gaza Strip, including Rafah, after Israel launched an offensive against the city and seized the border crossing with Egypt.
