The Israeli military said engineers discovered a tunnel 10 meters deep and 55 meters long leading to a blast door that Hamas uses to prevent Israeli forces from entering command centers and underground facilities.
Hamas admits to having a network of hundreds of kilometres of tunnels, shelters and secret hatches across the Palestinian territories, but denies these tunnels are located in civilian infrastructure such as hospitals.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military accused Hamas of placing its main command center in a tunnel beneath Al-Shifa hospital.
In another development, on the same day, the Chief of General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, approved a plan for a ground offensive in the Gaza Strip. Israel made the move after a situation assessment meeting between Mr. Halevi and top Israeli military officials at the IDF Southern Command in Beersheba.
The IDF is currently operating on the ground in northern Gaza, but is expected to expand operations to the southern region in the coming period.
