Apple’s upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) could mark a major shift in the design language of its iOS, macOS, and iPadOS operating systems, according to Bloomberg. While details are still limited, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman says Apple is working to unify the design of its upcoming platforms, partly influenced by visionOS, the operating system that powers the Vision Pro.
iOS 19 will be a highly anticipated update
While Vision Pro hasn’t really caught on with consumers, its visual and gesture-based interface could catch the attention of Apple’s software designers. Part of that effort, Gurman said, is to make Apple’s platforms look more similar. Currently, icons for apps like Safari and Settings are largely the same, with the main differences being whether they’re round or square.
Ready to take iOS into the new era
Apple hasn't made significant changes to iOS and macOS in a long time. While macOS got a major design update in 2020 with macOS Big Sur, the last major design overhaul for iOS was over a decade ago, when Apple ditched much of the skeuomorphic design of the original iPhone.
Apple abandoned skeuomorphism design style when launching iOS 7
Skeuomorphism, a design style where icons look like the objects they represent, was once very popular. For example, the Photos app used to be a flower, while the Settings app looked like a set of three gears. But since iOS 7, under the leadership of former design chief Jony Ive, Apple has moved towards a flatter, cleaner design style.
This new effort could be an opportunity for Apple to create a unified look and feel across its platforms. While they may not look identical mechanically, some of the functionality could be synchronized for users. It would be annoying if the same action worked differently on an iPhone and a Mac, an iPad, or a Vision Pro.
With this information, WWDC 2025 promises to be an important moment for the Apple ecosystem. In addition to the familiar feature upgrades that come with each version, the scale of the changes this time around could be much larger than what we've seen before.
