Facing the stronger Iraq team in the match at Group D of the 2023 Asian Cup on the evening of January 15, coach Shin Tae Yong's Indonesian team tried very hard. Especially in the first half, the team from the archipelago played evenly with their opponents.

The turning point of the match came at the end of the first half, when the score was 1-1, Osama Rashid helped Iraq take a 2-1 lead after a controversial situation. Specifically, an Iraqi player seemed to be in an offside position when participating in the attack that led to Osama Rashid's goal.

Coach Shin Tae Yong and the coaching staff of the Indonesian team reacted strongly to the main referee Igiz Tantashev (Uzbekistan), but the goal was still recognized for Iraq. In the second half, Indonesia lost their spirit. In the end, the West Asian team won 3-1.

Evaluating the match, coach Shin Tae Yong said: "Iraq was the team that controlled better and was superior, and they were the team that scored more goals. But I must also say that the second goal changed the outcome of the match.

At the 2023 Asian Cup, many new and modern technologies are applied, but the final decision still belongs to the referee. I regret and am ashamed of the referee's decision in Indonesia's second goal."

"I don't know why the second goal was not considered offside. The Indonesian team conceded an unreasonable goal, which is unacceptable to me. It was 100% offside. And if this is really a wrong decision by the referee, we are very sorry.

This decision will reduce the image and value of the Asian Cup. I am very ashamed, because it was an important moment of the match," the Korean strategist emphasized.

Coach Shin added: "If the referee had done well and we hadn't conceded the second goal, who knows what would have happened. Even though Iraq is the stronger team, I think Indonesia played well and if they had scored more goals, we might have had a draw. Losing 1-3 is a difficult result and affects our journey to the next round."

With the loss to Iraq, the Indonesian team is at a disadvantage in Group D. However, coach Shin Tae Yong affirmed that Indonesia will not give up on its goal.

"Although we lost to Iraq, our team showed good fighting spirit. The result shows that Indonesia lost in terms of score but had superior ball control. These things will be maintained in the upcoming match. We will keep our determination and not easily fall in this group.

In the remaining two matches, both Vietnam and Japan are strong. But I have a lot of experience as a coach, especially when I led Korea in the 2018 World Cup.

No one at that time could have expected that we would defeat the powerful German team. Therefore, Indonesia will not surrender but will accept all challenges and move forward," Coach Shin affirmed.

Meanwhile, Iraq coach Jesus Casas said: "The referee was very fair although every coach has a reaction. I respect coach Shin Tae Yong's statement, but we won thanks to control and great performance, not like he said."

"We will analyze the match and try to prepare for the next match with Japan. The match between Vietnam and Japan will also be reviewed. All matches are difficult and the match with Japan is the most difficult," the "captain" of the Iraqi team concluded.
