In order to control and prevent the spread of African swine fever on a large scale, Cu Kuin district has been drastically implementing many response measures.
The epidemic is complicated
The outbreak of African swine fever in Cu Kuin district has caused great damage to farmers and directly affected the environment and people's lives.
Despite many years of experience raising pigs, Mr. Pham Van Binh's family (Giang Son village, Hoa Hiep commune) still could not avoid heavy losses due to the resurgence of African swine fever.
According to Mr. Binh, before re-herding, his family proactively bought lime powder for disinfection and regularly cleaned the barns. However, in November 2023, he discovered that the pigs had symptoms of anorexia, fever, then turned purple and gradually died. Local authorities and veterinary officers came to inspect, took samples for testing and announced that the pigs were infected with African swine fever, forcing them to destroy 91 pigs with a total weight of 3,972 kg.
“The cost of raising pigs has increased quite a lot, my whole family has to borrow money to maintain the herd. We haven’t had time to make up for the losses caused by the fluctuating pig prices, now the whole herd has been infected and has to be destroyed, all of our family’s capital is considered lost,” Mr. Binh said sadly.

Having had to destroy 10 sows and 3 pigs due to African swine fever, Ms. Truong Thi Nguyen (Ea Kmar hamlet, Ea Bhok commune) understands better than anyone the damage caused by this disease. Ms. Nguyen said that at first, 1-2 of her family's pigs stopped eating and had high fevers. She thought that the pigs were just sick, so she bought medicine to treat them herself. However, the disease did not go away but got worse.
Immediately after the veterinary staff came to check, take samples and inform that her family's pigs had African swine fever, Ms. Nguyen sprinkled lime powder all over the barn area and sprayed disinfectant around the breeding area once a day. "After the disinfection period, waiting for the situation to stabilize, my family dared to re-herd. The outbreak of African swine fever is a lesson for my family in the need to strictly follow the breeding techniques and recommendations of the authorities to keep the pigs healthy," Ms. Nguyen shared.
Resolute, synchronized solutions
According to the report of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Station of Cu Kuin district, African swine fever has occurred since August 21, 2023, the disease broke out in pig herds of 14 households in 6 villages and hamlets in the communes of Ea Bhok, Ea Hu, Ea Ktur, Hoa Hiep. The authorities have destroyed 205 pigs, including 23 sows and 182 pigs, with a total weight of 11,448 kg.
Faced with the complicated developments of African swine fever, the People's Committee of Cu Kuin district has decided to declare an epidemic of African swine fever in the district to implement measures to prevent and control the disease from spreading widely. In order to prevent and control the disease promptly and effectively, ensuring the supply of pork in the coming time, the People's Committee of the district has directed specialized agencies to coordinate with commune-level localities to establish inspection teams, guide and urge the implementation of African swine fever prevention and control; proactively and closely monitor the epidemic situation, ensure early detection, warning and direct the thorough handling of outbreaks, and prevent the disease from spreading widely.

In addition, the District People's Committee also requested localities and livestock households to promptly detect, prevent and strictly handle cases of buying, selling, transporting sick pigs, dumping dead pigs causing disease spread, polluting the environment... Relevant units and localities continue to monitor livestock households, promptly take samples for testing at households with sick, dead, or suspected pigs; promptly synthesize and report on the disease situation and prevention and control work in the district; strengthen quarantine in circulation, resolutely handle cases of transporting pigs of unknown origin according to regulations...
Mr. Le Van Chin, Head of the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Station of Cu Kuin district, said that the total pig herd in the district is currently nearly 75,000. To protect the safety of the pig herd in the context of complicated disease developments, the station has stepped up propaganda and advised people to implement biosafety measures to minimize the spread of African swine fever virus into the area. Along with that, farmers need to raise their awareness, strictly comply with regulations on animal husbandry, regularly clean barns, and spray disinfectants to destroy pathogens.
