In the last days of 2024, farmers in Phu Long town (Ham Thuan Bac) were busy taking care of and harvesting vegetables in excitement and bustle.
The hustle and bustle happens because this is the time when vegetables are in high demand and have good prices.
In the vegetable field of Phu Cuong village, Ms. Nguyen Thi Hue is chatting animatedly with several other farmers about the recent fluctuations in vegetable prices. Since mid-December 2024, due to the impact of storms and tropical depressions, unseasonal rains have occurred in some provinces and cities across the country. Due to the lower supply from Da Lat and neighboring areas imported to Binh Thuan, some vegetables in the Phu Long growing area have increased in price.
According to Ms. Hue, compared to about 10 days ago, the price of green onions sold in the garden has increased from 17,000 VND to 22,000 VND/kg, and lettuce (water fern) from 8,000 VND to 30,000 VND/kg. In addition, basil, Vietnamese mint, and coriander have all increased in price by 30-50% compared to a few weeks ago. Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Phuong, a farmer in Phu Cuong village who is harvesting lettuce, said: In recent days, the Phu Long vegetable area has also been affected by rain, so the output has decreased. However, thanks to high prices, farmers have made a profit, making up for the lost output. According to Ms. Phuong, after harvesting, these vegetables will be sold wholesale to retailers in Phu Long, then distributed to other areas such as Phan Thiet, Ham Thuan Bac... to serve consumers.
Also due to the unusual weather, some other households in the town growing basil and herbs suffered damage, resulting in poor yields. Despite the high prices, many households still have no products to sell. Currently, the growers are taking care of the newly sown vegetables to serve the market for the Lunar New Year 2025. Given the erratic weather, people cannot help but worry about the development of vegetable crops, output, and prices in the coming time.
According to the People's Committee of Phu Long town, the locality currently has over 40 hectares of vegetable growing area, concentrated in the neighborhoods of Phu Cuong, Phu Truong, and Phu An. These are places that specialize in providing many types of vegetables to serve people in the area and neighboring areas for many years.
