Prices of many items such as vegetables, meat, fish... at markets are on the rise. However, many supermarkets affirm that there is no shortage of essential food supplies for the end of the year, and are still trying to maintain promotions.
The price of many foods tends to increase, causing many consumer under great pressure with spending problems so choose to go to the supermarket more in the hope of hunting for promotional items.
Prices of vegetables, meat, fish... at the market increased
According to records at retail markets in Ho Chi Minh City on October 17 and 18, The selling price of many types of vegetable products remains high and tends to increase.
Specifically, at Binh Quoi market, Ba Chieu (Binh Thanh district), Tan Dinh market (district 1)..., tomatoes are 35,000 - 45,000 VND/kg, cabbage is 20,000 - 25,000 VND/kg, green beans are 30,000 - 40,000 VND/kg, vegetables are 25,000 - 35,000 VND/kg depending on the type...
This price is considered by many buyers to increase by 30-50% compared to months with stable prices and long-term high anchoring.
"The price of many vegetables has been increasing recently because Lam Dong - the area that supplies 60-70% of vegetables to Ho Chi Minh City - is experiencing a decrease in production due to stormy weather," explained Ms. Nguyen Hong, a trader at Ba Chieu market.
Meanwhile, information from Binh Dien wholesale market (HCMC) shows that prices of many seafood products sold at the market are increasing compared to previous months, such as mackerel at 140,000 - 170,000 VND/kg, silver pomfret at 60,000 - 70,000 VND/kg, mullet at 75,000 - 95,000 VND/kg...
Similarly, the price of pork sold at Hoc Mon wholesale market (HCMC) is currently at 78,000 - 85,000 VND/kg, 20% higher than the low price of last year.
The price of many fresh foods has increased significantly, causing many housewives to have a headache when balancing their spending when going to the market. According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuan (Binh Thanh), fish, meat, vegetables... are staple foods so they cannot help but buy them.
"Income has decreased and prices of goods have increased, so this year I have to calculate my spending carefully, only prioritizing buying necessary products," Ms. Thuan honestly said.
Supermarket confirms no shortage of goods, will apply promotions
Although retail prices for many food products at the market tend to increase, supermarkets affirm that there will be no shortage of goods at the end of the year, and that eggs may even be in surplus and prices may decrease.
At the signing ceremony of the strategic cooperation with CPV FOOD on October 17, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong Ngoc - purchasing director, fresh food industry of Bach Hoa Xanh chain - said that the signing aims to increase the import volume of quality fresh chicken from CPV FOOD to serve consumers, especially for the high demand near Tet.
According to Ms. Ngoc, the unit has worked with many suppliers of meat, shrimp, eggs... and most of them have committed to increasing supplies with stable prices until the end of the year.
Currently, this system imports about 250 tons of fresh meat every day, from CPV alone about 1,000 tons per month (more than 30 tons/day), and plans to increase by 30-50% during peak times to ensure there is no shortage of goods in the entire system.
Similarly, representatives of many other retailers such as MM Mega Market, Co.opmart, Lotte Mart... said that with the commitment from suppliers, there will be no shortage of goods at the end of the year, and they will calculate to apply long-term promotions for many essential foods such as meat, eggs, vegetables...
"Abundant sources of goods and many promotions contribute to making consumers go to supermarkets more often in the hope of finding good prices, especially dry foods and cosmetics that are regularly promoted."
As a large food production and processing unit, CPV FOOD representative said that in addition to increasing the supply of fresh chicken to all retail systems, by the end of the year, it will launch more processed meat products such as chicken feet with sauce, crispy fried chicken wings, seaweed-rolled chicken...
Meanwhile, although he said egg prices increased slightly in the North due to the impact of previous storms and floods, Mr. Truong Chi Thien, general director of Vinh Thanh Dat Company (HCMC), affirmed that there is no shortage of fresh eggs and processed eggs at the end of the year, and there may even be a surplus; egg prices are forecast to decrease by 5-10% compared to last year's Tet.
"This year, many people have switched from raising pigs and chickens to raising egg-laying chickens; not to mention that the total number of egg-laying chickens of large enterprises is still quite abundant," Mr. Thien explained.
