Sharing about students' academic pressure is attracting public attention

"If you don't study extra, you will fall behind your friends"!

A post by an 11th grader on a forum with hundreds of thousands of members is attracting public attention as he expressed that he is under pressure from too much knowledge, has to attend extra classes almost every day of the week, and has no time to relax or hang out with friends or family... This makes him obsessed with studying.

This 11th grader shared: "I was born in 2007 and am studying the new program. I feel pressured by the amount of knowledge that makes me have to go to extra classes almost all week (all week-PV). I study 4 extra subjects: math, physics, English, chemistry, which makes me have no time to relax or go out with friends and family. Every day I have to go to extra classes, when I come home I sit at the desk to study and prepare for tomorrow's subject. The tests are so overwhelming that I can't get enough sleep, making me always feel pressured. Every day I can go to bed at 11:30 pm at the earliest and have to wake up at 5:30 am to prepare (lessons-PV) for school. Because of that, I always feel haunted and no longer enjoy studying."

"If I don't take extra classes, I will fall behind my friends. Is it possible to reduce the number of classes and tests?", an 11th grade student shared on the forum.

Is it because the program is heavy?

In response to the students' comments, teacher Le Hai Minh, who is teaching grade 11 at a high school in Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City, expressed his opinion: "Objectively speaking, the amount of knowledge in the 2018 General Education Program is not as scattered and overloaded as before. However, it is possible that with current grade 10 and 11 students, they have learned and accessed knowledge according to the orientation from grade 1 to grade 9 of the old General Education Program, but suddenly when they reach high school, they approach the goals and orientation of a completely new program."

Besides, according to teacher Hai Minh, some teachers have not really innovated their methods and guided students to learn according to the new curriculum approach, so it is inevitable that students will feel pressure.

Teacher Hai Minh analyzed that learning pressure is an eternal problem. The 2018 General Education Program aims to equip students with knowledge and skills, so it requires a great deal of self-study and research ability from students. However, students are still limited and have the habit of old learning methods, waiting for teachers to give instructions, outlines, exam review outlines, review, and memorize knowledge, so they will have difficulty completing learning tasks and solving problems in applying knowledge to specific requirements.

Also confirming that high school students are under pressure, teacher Lam Vu Cong Chinh, Nguyen Du High School (District 10, Ho Chi Minh City), assessed that the 11th grade program is the heaviest of the three grades, even with the old general education program. The characteristics of knowledge in such grades combined with a different approach to knowledge according to the old program make students face a lot of pressure in studying, if they do not have a proactive and self-studying mindset.

In addition, a math teacher at Nguyen Du High School (District 10) pointed out that the pressure students face in studying comes from the fact that some teachers are still "crazy" about knowledge, worried, "I don't know what the 2025 high school graduation exam will be like for this generation of students, what the exam questions are like?" so they have the mentality of just preparing to be sure. There are teachers who apply exercises from the old program to the new program, making teachers tired and students stressed.

Therefore, teacher Lam Vu Cong Chinh believes that there needs to be a synchronous change, from both teachers and students. Teachers need to adjust their teaching methods, and students need to be aware of self-studying and researching knowledge topics in advance so that learning will gradually become easier.
