“Preserving the soul of the homeland’s conical hats” is one of the attractive and meaningful experiential programs, contributing to spreading the love for the homeland through learning about traditional craft villages, helping students appreciate more the products imbued with the cultural identity and people of Vietnam.

According to research, the conical hat making profession in Thanh Tai village, Dong Van commune (Thanh Chuong) may have appeared hundreds of years ago. Although this is a secondary profession, existing alongside farming, it plays an important role in ensuring the lives of the people here. Currently, although it has been largely lost, the conical hat making profession is still preserved in this locality.

To make a hat, the maker must go through many elaborate steps, from rolling the leaves, pressing the leaves flat, then making the brim, spinning the hat, sewing the hat, removing the hat from the mold, cutting the thread, wefting the hat, threading the thread, and sewing the top. Each hat is covered with two layers of leaves, and between the two layers is a layer of bamboo leaves to make the hat thicker and stronger, to prevent it from getting wet in the rain. The craftsman skillfully threads colored threads on the inside of the hat to tie the hat strap. When the hat is sold, the hat maker will apply a layer of oil to create an ivory white conical hat that is durable, beautiful, and waterproof.

A beautiful hat must have a flat roof, smooth stitching, and evenly spaced stitches on each brim. Professional hat maker Thanh Tai can make 1 to 2 hats per day…
