In the 2024-2025 school year, Hanoi plans to enroll 81,200 students in public high schools and 29,100 students in private schools.
However, the number of junior high school graduates is 133,000, an increase of 5,732 students compared to last year. With about 100,000 students taking the public 10th grade entrance exam (nearly 30,000 students did not take the exam), only about 61% were admitted to public schools.
There are some areas where the number of public schools enrolling is low and the population is dense, so the above ratio is even lower. Some public schools with high competition have reduced enrollment quotas this year.
Therefore, the 10th grade entrance exam is considered more stressful than the university entrance exam, because the "door" is too narrow.
Students spend 17 hours a day studying.
Pham Van Hien - grade 9, Bien Giang Secondary School (Ha Dong) - said that at this time, he has to spend about 17 hours a day to review.
Currently, 9th grade students have to finish their regular curriculum and have extra review hours at school. But after school, Hien still studies outside until 8-9pm before returning home. After showering and having dinner, Hien continues to study by himself until 12am.
"Usually I study 4 shifts a day, sometimes 5 shifts. There is very little time left for eating, cleaning and sleeping," Hien said about his recent schedule.
However, Hien was still in a state of anxiety. Knowing that many of his friends studied online at night, he was worried so he signed up for more classes. There were days when he slept until 1am and woke up at 6am to go to school.
These days, many 9th graders like Hien become "night owls". After finishing their studies, they chat with each other to share materials and practice questions.
"Everyone is afraid of their parents' advice to study carefully. If they fail all their wishes, the only way left is to take remedial classes," Hien shared.

Huong, a 9th grade student at Trung Nhi Secondary School (Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi), said she had 3 extra classes a day outside of school hours, including 1 online class. But near the exam date, some classes were twice as long, and she had to bring food to eat in the classroom.
Many parents are scrambling to find private schools for their children to study "just in case" and also urge them to study. Many people feel that 4-5 sessions are not enough for their children. Pressure from parents continues to pour down on their children. However, many parents also feel the pressure from their children before the exam but have no way to "reduce the pressure".
"My child has acid reflux. He has no history of stomach problems, but the more medicine he takes, the worse it gets. I consulted a psychologist and found out that it is likely that he is too stressed, leading to this condition.
When discussing in the parent group, many fathers and mothers said their children also had similar symptoms. Stress, irregular eating between extra classes or going straight to school right after eating causes many students to suffer from reflux, stomach pain, colon spasms, food poisoning...", Ms. Diep Anh, a parent with a 9th grader in Tay Ho district, shared.
Does working overtime increase your chances of passing the 10th grade exam?
According to Mr. Nguyen Trung Kien - Principal of Lang Ha Secondary School, all parents want their children to pass the public school entrance exam, so they are under pressure and stress. But the best thing for children during this period is to help them have the most comfortable mentality to prepare for the exam.
Studying overtime not only affects health but is also ineffective. This even makes students tired and less confident, leaving no time to consolidate basic knowledge.
According to some secondary school teachers in Hanoi, numbers such as quotas, "competition" rates, and annual benchmark scores are only reference factors to visualize the relative competition in schools. The chance of passing still depends largely on each student.
To master the basic knowledge, students only need to focus on reviewing according to the teacher's instructions in class and systematizing the knowledge themselves. Then, students can search for questions to practice based on the reference exam questions announced by the Department of Education and Training. When they study well on their own, they will know what they are missing, what parts are unclear, and what they do not understand to ask the teacher and learn more.
Running around with multiple revision sessions will leave students with insufficient time to systematize their knowledge and practice. Not to mention that when they are tired, they will not absorb the lessons effectively. And thus, studying more will not be beneficial.
The entrance exam for grade 10 in Hanoi public schools will take place on June 8 and 9 (for non-specialized students) and June 10 and 11 for students applying for specialized students and dual degree programs. Students must take three general exams (non-specialized) in math, literature, and foreign language. Students applying for specialized students and dual degree programs will take additional exams as required.
The Hanoi Department of Education and Training plans to approve the admission scores for public grade 10 on July 5. Students have 3 wishes to enter public grade 10, of which 2 wishes are in the same enrollment area that matches the student's residential address, 1 wish is in any area. In addition, students also have wishes to enter specialized groups, dual degree programs...
