At the press conference before the second leg of the AFF Cup 2024 final on the morning of January 4 in Thailand, coach Kim Sang Sik shared his feelings about the performance of the Vietnamese team in the first leg. He said: "I am satisfied with what happened in the first leg of the final, but I hope the players will forget what happened in this match."
The Korean strategist emphasized the importance of the next match: “I understand that tomorrow's match will be very difficult, Thailand will be much stronger. Tomorrow, we want to win and my goal is to win the championship with the Vietnamese team.”
The Vietnamese team won 2-1 against Thailand at Viet Tri Stadium (Phu Tho) on January 2. The two teams will play the second leg of the final at 8:00 p.m. on January 5 at Rajamangala Stadium (Thailand). As long as they do not lose to Thailand, the Vietnamese team will certainly win the AFF Cup 2024.
Sharing about the pressure that the Vietnamese team faces when playing away, coach Kim Sang Sik said: “We received enthusiastic support from home fans in the first leg of the final. In the second leg, we will face pressure from Thai fans. We have made the best preparations for tomorrow's match.” It is known that the 50,000-seat Rajamangala Stadium has sold out tickets for the second leg of the 2024 AFF Cup final.
Coach Kim Sang Sik shared about his journey since taking on the role of head coach of the Vietnam national team in June 2024. He said: “I have been in Vietnam for 6 months and have only really started my job for about 3 months. With such a short period of time, it is not easy to understand the players.”
However, Mr. Kim Sang Sik also emphasized that the time training together helped him understand the team better. “We had a month of training together, including the time in Korea, which helped me understand the players better, from their playing style to their lifestyle,” he said.
Coach Kim also shared about the bond between him and the players: “We often talk to each other from the dining room to the training ground. We have a better bond. That gives me confidence that the team will achieve good results in this year's tournament.”
There are comparisons when coach Kim Sang Sik, a Korean, will face Masatada Ishii, a Japanese. However, coach Kim Sang Sik said that this is not the main issue, the important thing is that this is a match between two teams representing two countries. He said: "This is a match between two national teams, not a match between two clubs. I hope the players understand this to keep their will strong. We come to Thailand with the determination to win and win the championship."
While Vietnam is experiencing cold weather, Thailand is facing sweltering heat. This change in weather has posed a big challenge for the Vietnamese players. Coach Kim Sang Sik shared about this situation: “The Vietnamese players are a bit tired due to the difference in weather. However, we have been training hard for more than a month before the tournament took place in many different types of weather. We will try our best for tomorrow's match.”
