Responding to climate change and protecting the earth has become an urgent need for the whole world. In this situation, Vietnam's tourism industry has gradually transformed into a green one, implementing a type of tourism based on the rational use of natural resources, in order to limit negative impacts on the living environment.

Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Tourism Administration Ha Van Sieu said that the trend of green tourism, quality tourism, and health assurance is being promoted and becoming the priority choice of many tourists.

As a key event in a series of activities within the framework, on the morning of April 12, the Vietnam Tourism Forum - green transformation for sustainable development organized by the Vietnam Tourism Association took place in Hanoi.

Speaking at the program, Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism Ha Van Sieu stated that the trend of green, quality, and health-assured tourism is being promoted and becoming the priority choice of many tourists. However, green here is not a matter of color coverage but the process of greening in thinking and action so that individuals and groups can form a green culture. Only when this is clearly recognized, the tourism industry will have green destinations, green products, and green services.

It can be seen that adapting to climate change is both a responsibility and an opportunity for Vietnam to implement green transformation to enhance the competitiveness of the economy. Joining hands with the world to solve the climate crisis and reduce emissions, the Government has issued many environmental policies, assigning tasks to ministries, departments and branches to participate in specific activities.

Tourism is a comprehensive economic sector, interdisciplinary, inter-regional and highly socialized. All changes in society and nature affect tourism. The negative impacts of climate change and environmental degradation also cause many difficulties for this industry. Therefore, green transformation is considered an inevitable process of tourism in our country.

Chairman of the Vietnam Tourism Association Vu The Binh said: “Following the direction of the Government and the direction of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Vietnam Tourism Association has proactively mobilized tourism businesses nationwide to implement green transformation to join hands in protecting the environment. From there, promoting tourism to become a green economic sector on the basis of developing green tourism products, green services and most importantly, raising awareness and actions of the business system so that the whole industry can develop sustainably and effectively.”

Overview of Vietnam Tourism Forum - green transformation for sustainable development.

According to Mr. Patrick Haverman, Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP in Vietnam, the green transformation process in tourism in Vietnam needs to focus on a number of issues such as green planning, effective destination management, plastic waste-free and low-carbon tourism, and nature-based sustainable tourism.

However, implementing this transition requires organizations and businesses to plan meticulously and consider carefully to ensure that all tourism activities are consistent with conservation goals. At the same time, actively attract the participation of communities and localities to form a green culture in their lifestyle to both preserve the environment and promote socio-economic development.

At the Vietnam Tourism Forum, managers, experts and business representatives discussed the responsibilities and participation of stakeholders in turning tourism into a green economy, a circular economy, and positioning the Vietnamese tourism brand in the world. In addition, solutions to improve the growth of businesses and the lives of millions of workers in the tourism sector were also mentioned by speakers.

Looking back at the process of Vietnam Tourism Association promoting green transformation

Since 2018, the Vietnam Tourism Association has launched the movement “Vietnam Tourism - join hands to reduce plastic waste”. This event has received strong response from businesses nationwide. Many organizations and localities have achieved high results in plastic waste reduction activities.

At the Vietnam International Tourism Fair - VITM Hanoi 2019, the Association also chose the theme of "Green Tourism", directing the activities of businesses according to 4 contents: developing tourism activities without using plastic waste; building tours without using motor vehicles (walking, cycling...); developing community tourism, eco-tourism, agricultural and rural tourism; mobilizing waste collection at tourist destinations.

The above events and activities are the basis and foundation for systematically building the Vietnam International Tourism Fair - VITM Hanoi 2024 with the theme "Vietnam Tourism - green transformation for sustainable development".
