TPO - The American International School cannot reopen with just a few days left until the new school year officially begins. To date, 326 students who have not completed transfer procedures are at risk of having their studies interrupted.

The above information was announced by Mr. Ho Tan Minh, Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City (GD&DT) at a press conference on the socio-economic situation on the afternoon of August 29.

Accordingly, the American International School (AISVN in Nha Be District) is being proposed to have its establishment and business license revoked due to tax arrears. Mr. Ho Tan Minh - Chief of Office of the Department of Education and Training confirmed that up to this point, the American International School cannot reopen for the new school year. In the face of this situation, the Department of Education and Training has proactively taken measures and directed education departments to support students studying at the American International School with the goal that all students will continue to go to school.

Up to now, the education departments have proactively allocated students from the American International School according to the students' residential areas, creating favorable conditions for students to continue attending school. Schools that still have enough quotas have plans to receive students from the American International School.

In addition, the leaders of the Department of Education and Training have gone to Nha Be to guide parents on how to transfer their children to another school when needed. However, up to this point, many parents have not come to consult the instructions and have not transferred their children to another school.

According to statistics from the Department of Education and Training, as of August 29, only 757 students had their parents complete the transfer procedures, while 326 students had not yet been registered by their parents or completed the transfer procedures (not including students who have graduated from high school or students with foreign nationality who have returned home). The number of students who have not yet transferred face the risk of having their studies interrupted if their parents have not registered their transfer by September 5.

Faced with the above situation, the Department of Education and Training calls on parents whose children are studying at the American International School to proactively go to the education department to carry out school transfer procedures to help their children continue studying.

AISVN was established in 2006, headquartered in Nha Be district. At the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year, the school had more than 1,310 students, most of whom followed the IB (International Baccalaureate) program. AISVN's tuition fees are 280-725 million VND per year, depending on the level of study.

In July 2023, parents gathered at the school to collect debts, most of the teachers did not show up to teach, forcing students to drop out of school. The school owner said that he was facing serious financial difficulties and could not pay salaries. Meanwhile, more than 900 parents paid financial packages, totaling about 3,600 billion VND. This amount is interest-free, has no collateral, and the school owner promised to refund it after their children graduate.

To maintain operations, AISVN is calling on parents to contribute an additional VND9.5-25.5 million per student per month. Nearly 750 people have contributed VND31 billion, but AISVN estimates it will need at least VND125 billion.
