Traffic jam
While traveling on National Highway 14G from Da Nang to the center of Dong Giang district, a long line of vehicles had to stop at A Lieng village (A Ting commune, Dong Giang). The reason was that a 4-seat car had a stuck wheel, and the car's undercarriage was blocked by a layer of mud, so it could not move.
At the above location, the contractor is constructing a drainage culvert across the road. After completing half of the culvert, the construction unit restored half of the road surface to ensure traffic, then moved on to the remaining part. However, due to poor restoration, the gravel layer mixed with rain and mud caused subsidence when traveling.
According to local residents, Highway 14G is the only route through the area, with no detours. During the rainy season, if landslides occur, traffic on Highway 14G connecting Da Nang with Dong Giang and Tay Giang districts will be cut off.
A resident of Ba Commune (Dong Giang) for more than 49 years shared that QL14G has not seen any fundamental changes in the scale and quality of the road surface. The renovation has only stopped at maintaining and widening some sections of the road surface, the rest are mostly small, winding sections.
During the rainy and stormy season, Dong Giang and Tay Giang districts are worried about traffic jams on National Highway 14G and Ho Chi Minh Road. From Tay Giang district, people want to go to Da Nang by traveling on Ho Chi Minh Road, entering Prao town (Dong Giang) and then going down National Highway 14G.
But during the rainy season, landslides often occur on the Ho Chi Minh road connecting Tay Giang and Dong Giang. To get to Tay Giang, Dong Giang residents can only travel on the Ho Chi Minh road, there is no other road to access.
Mr. Nguyen Duc Huy - Head of the Economic and Infrastructure Department of Dong Giang district said that from the pilot policy of investing in traffic infrastructure associated with the development of raw material areas in mountainous areas, the road to the production area of A Dinh residential area (Prao town) was invested with a length of 3km; 5m wide roadbed; crushed stone road surface; total investment of nearly 15 billion VND (the provincial budget supported more than 9.9 billion VND).
Completed in 2023, the project has facilitated people's travel, production, and settlement. Trucks come to the fields to buy products, so they can sell at a good price, increasing income. However, this route has not yet reached its maximum efficiency due to lack of funding to solidify the road surface.
Urgent investment
According to Mr. Ho Hiep - Director of the Management Board of Construction Investment and Land Fund Development of Dong Giang district, the district has tried to mobilize all resources to invest in traffic infrastructure.
Typically, the inner-city road west of Prao town starts at Ho Chi Minh road on the west bank of A Vuong river, reaches A Rooi commune, 7.3km long with a total investment of 170 billion VND (the province supports 162 billion VND) and has been basically completed.
The eastern inner-city road combined with lowering the foundation to avoid the risk of landslides on Kiem Lam hill into the residential area of Prao town has a total investment of 249 billion VND (the province supports 224 billion VND) and has now reached about 80% of the volume. On the DH1.DG route, the Song Vau bridge with a total investment of 25 billion VND is in the stage of laying the beams, striving to finish 3 months ahead of schedule.
According to Mr. A Vo To Phuong - Chairman of Dong Giang District People's Committee, although the district has made every effort, investment resources for transport infrastructure, especially inter-regional transport, and roads to production areas combined with resettlement for people are still limited.
Apart from Ho Chi Minh Road, there is no safe and interconnected road between Dong Giang and Tay Giang. With the current terrain, the authorities cannot open another road parallel to National Highway 14G.
However, Highway 14G has not been invested in upgrading or expanding; it has only been repaired piecemeal, so it is still a major barrier to socio-economic development. Many businesses have come to explore investment opportunities, but when they see the reality, Highway 14G has "gone forever".
Investing in breakthrough and widespread transport infrastructure projects meets the travel needs of the people, attracts businesses and investors to Dong Giang, promotes the potential and strengths of the locality, and contributes to the implementation of necessary socio-economic development goals.
To remove the above "bottleneck" not only in the mountainous districts in the northwest of Quang Nam province, the Ministry of Transport needs to soon have a policy to invest in comprehensively renovating and upgrading National Highway 14G.
On January 8, 2025, the People's Committee of Dong Giang district submitted a document to the People's Council and the Provincial People's Committee on supplementing the medium-term public investment portfolio, period 2025 - 2030 from the provincial budget. In particular, traffic infrastructure includes 3 categories: A Ting - Jo Ngay - Song Kon inter-commune road project; A Rooi commune road project, Dong Giang district connecting Dang commune, Tay Giang district; Project to repair and upgrade the road surface to A Dinh residential area.
