The American travel search engine Kayak (owned by Booking) has just announced a list of the 10 cheapest cities in Asia for tourists, including two cities in Vietnam.
To save more on Asian destinations, Kayak's experts recommend that travelers "plan your trip during the fall travel season (October-November) and save up to 12% on flights compared to peak travel season (May-July)." From there, Kayak provided data on which destinations in Asia are the cheapest to travel to. To come up with the list of the 10 most affordable cities in Asia, they looked at searches from January to June 2024 for travel to Asia between June and December 2024. The site combined the average round-trip economy airfare with the average price per night for a double standard hotel to determine the 10 cheapest Asian cities for travelers to visit right now. With an average total cost of 1,452 USD, Ho Chi Minh City is the second cheapest city to travel to, after Taipei.

Accordingly, Vietnam Airlines currently has direct flights from San Francisco to Ho Chi Minh City that are really worth it. The cost to book this flight directly with Vietnam Airlines starts at just $660 round trip, and this is currently one of the only direct flights from Southeast Asia to North America. In addition to the affordable flights, food and accommodation are also quite cheap. Kayak's experts also emphasized that Vietnam is the "country with the lowest travel costs" in Southeast Asia. The third cheapest city in Asia is Jakarta, Indonesia at $1,478; followed by New Delhi, India at $1,490; Bangkok, Thailand at $1,493; Manila, Philippines at $1,495; Tokyo, Japan at $1,499; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at $1,505. With a total cost for the trip of $1,546, Hanoi is the ninth cheapest city on the list, ahead of Osaka, Japan. Vietnam is one of two countries to appear twice on this list, which is not surprising to those who are knowledgeable about Asian travel.

"When you come to Vietnam, you're coming to a country with great food, great value hotels, and a great transport system. Accommodation, from budget to luxury, is much cheaper than in surrounding countries. Domestic business class flights in Vietnam are great value and make the experience at the country's busy airports much more enjoyable; even economy flights are much cheaper than similar routes in the US," said Kayak expert Ethan Crowley, adding that "Vietnam's street food is some of the cheapest in the region."
