Ha Tinh plans to vaccinate against African swine fever

Ha Tinh will organize vaccination against African swine fever (ASF) for pigs at farms in need. This is also the first time Ha Tinh has carried out vaccination against this dangerous disease.

DTLPC has caused great damage to the livestock industry since 2019.

The People's Committee of Ha Tinh province has just issued Document No. 4356/UBND-NL5 on the use of DTLCP vaccines. Accordingly, the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee assigned departments, branches, and local People's Committees to continue to resolutely and synchronously implement DTLCP prevention measures and consider and decide on the use of DTLCP vaccines.

People's Committees of districts, cities and towns direct specialized agencies to propagate, disseminate and, based on the epidemic situation, advise on the use of DTLCP vaccine to prevent and control epidemics in the locality; develop a plan to organize sample collection for monitoring and evaluation after DTLCP vaccination.

Make a list of livestock facilities in need of vaccination, including subject information on facility name, address, contact information, quantity, and subjects meeting the conditions for vaccination according to the manufacturer's recommendations, and send it to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (through the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine) before September 1, 2023 for implementation.

Direct specialized agencies and local authorities to guide, implement vaccination and use vaccines according to the manufacturer's instructions, and at the same time, monitor and supervise the health status of pigs after vaccination.

During the vaccination process, pigs may be infected with the field ASF virus and other pathogens, so there is a possibility of reactions, illness, death and the outbreak must be handled and pigs must be destroyed according to regulations; it is necessary to fully prepare plans, tools, and necessary materials to respond to, overcome, and handle arising problems and incidents.

The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development directs the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine to base on the directives and guidance documents of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Department of Animal Health to provide and ensure timely vaccines; coordinate with vaccine production units to guide localities and facilities in the process of selecting subjects, implementing and collecting samples for monitoring and evaluating after vaccination.

ASF first appeared in Ha Tinh in May 2019. According to the report of the Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine of Ha Tinh, from January 2021 to December 15, 2021 alone, ASF occurred in 134 communes and towns in 13 districts, cities and towns with a total of 16,324 infected pigs, forcing the destruction of 16,260 pigs, weighing 1,199 tons.

Up to now, our country has had 2 types of ASFV vaccines (NAVET-ASFVAC researched and produced by NAVETCO Central Veterinary Medicine Joint Stock Company and AVAC ASF LIVE researched and produced by AVAC Vietnam Joint Stock Company) registered and granted circulation certificates in accordance with the provisions of the Veterinary Law and international technical standards for veterinary vaccines.

These are the first commercial DTLCP vaccines licensed for circulation, especially in the context that after more than 100 years, there has not been a licensed commercial DTLCP vaccine in the world.
