China Central Television (CCTV) reported on November 28 that several Chinese naval vessels, including a destroyer and a frigate, arrived in Myanmar's Yangon city on November 27, starting a four-day visit.
According to the itinerary, the Chinese delegation will participate in "professional exchanges, cultural and sports competitions, and visits to military facilities with officers and sailors of the Myanmar Navy."
Myanmar military government spokesman Zaw Min Tun confirmed that two Chinese warships and a supply ship docked at Thilawa port in Yangon on November 27 ahead of a "Myanmar-China naval security exercise," according to the Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper.
Senior officers of the Myanmar Navy welcome their Chinese counterparts to Myanmar on November 27.
Zaw Min Tun did not provide further details about the exercise but said the visit by the Chinese warship reflected the “strong friendship” between the two militaries. This is the first visit by a Chinese naval vessel to Myanmar since 2017, according to the South China Morning Post .
The visit comes amid fighting between Myanmar’s military and an alliance of three ethnic armed groups near the Chinese border in northern Shan State, which claims to have seized several key commercial hubs since launching an offensive against the military last month.
At a press conference on November 28, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said Beijing was very concerned about the situation in northern Myanmar and called on relevant parties in the Southeast Asian country to immediately cease fire, avoid escalating the situation, and take effective measures to ensure security and stability along the China-Myanmar border, according to China Daily .
