Before the Lunar New Year holiday, from early morning, traffic at the gateways leaving Ho Chi Minh City to the provinces began to be tense. There were long lines of vehicles on national highways and expressways, making movement very difficult.
On the morning of January 24 (the 25th day of the Lunar New Year), a large number of people left Ho Chi Minh City to return to their hometowns in the West to celebrate Tet. National Highway 1 (now called Le Kha Phieu Street), Ho Chi Minh City - Trung Luong Expressway... passing through Binh Chanh District were always crowded.
Passenger vans and private cars are packed with motorbikes and it is very difficult to move each meter.
Mr. Nguyen Minh Son (living in Binh Tan district) said that his hometown is Tien Giang. This morning, he drove his motorbike with his wife and two small children back to his hometown to celebrate Tet early.
"I left home at 7am to avoid traffic jams. However, when I got to the An Lac roundabout, it was too crowded and all the cars had to move slowly. Every year, this area is often congested because the road in front is small, creating a bottleneck," said Mr. Son.
In the East, the traffic situation is equally tense. For many days, at hot spots such as the An Phu intersection to the Long Phuoc toll station, long lines of vehicles moved slowly.
Traffic police forces must continuously organize traffic flow, guide vehicles to move through Vo Chi Cong, Vo Nguyen Giap streets, National Highway 1 and Cat Lai ferry area, and limit access to the highway.
The Cat Lai ferry area from Thu Duc city to Nhon Trach district (Dong Nai) is also equally tense.
The Ho Chi Minh City Youth Volunteer Ferry Management Company (the Cat Lai ferry management unit) said that it is estimated that the ferry carries about 40,000 passengers per day. On December 24th alone, when the highway is closed, the number of vehicles passing through Cat Lai ferry is higher, so the management unit has mobilized maximum personnel and ferries to serve. This unit predicts that the highest number of passengers will fall on December 26th, 27th, and 28th with about 60,000 passengers.
Bus stations and airports are busy serving customers.
Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport forecasts that during the peak of Lunar New Year 2025, an average of 93,500 passengers/day will pass through inter-provincial bus stations.
In particular, at Mien Tay Bus Station, peak days can reach more than 2,000 vehicles and 62,000 passengers. Currently, units have increased about 300 vehicles to the station to relieve passengers when needed.
The old Eastern Bus Station (Binh Thanh District) has become bustling in recent days as thousands of passengers carrying luggage and belongings flock here to prepare to board buses to return home for Tet.
This bus station currently only serves a few fixed routes to the provinces of Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, Dak Nong, Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Dak Lak... However, people's travel needs increase during Tet because this is a familiar destination.
Mr. Do Phu Dat - Deputy General Director of Mien Dong Bus Station, said that during the peak of Tet, the station served about 182,000 passengers. From today (December 25 to 28), the number of passengers fluctuated around 19,000/day.
“The buses during peak days are almost full. We have arranged additional buses to ensure that people’s travel needs are met,” Mr. Dat shared.
At Tan Son Nhat airport, during Tet peak there are about 26,000 flights, with a total of about 4 million passengers.
Today alone, the airport operated 1,002 flights with more than 150,000 passengers. Since early morning, the number of passengers flocking to the airport has been increasing. In front of the ticket counters, airlines are always packed with people queuing. Inside the security control area, the waiting area to board the plane is also in the same situation.
