In a mountainous province, Huy Hau's IT talent was discovered by teachers in grade 3 and guided, helping him become valedictorian of the national excellent student exam at the age of 15.

Dang Huy Hau, a 10th grade student at Thang Long High School for the Gifted - Da Lat, led the national excellent student exam in Information Technology with 25.25/40 points.

"Winning first place was already very happy, but I was extremely surprised to have the highest score in the country. When the teacher called, I couldn't believe it," Hau said.

The male student said that after the exam, he consulted the answers with his teacher and friends, and estimated that he would get about 25 points, but was not sure of winning first prize. During the review process, he kept a relaxed mentality, no pressure, and did not think about the position of valedictorian because he was only in 10th grade.

According to Principal Dao Manh Trinh, Lam Dong has had a number of students enter the international team selection round, but Hau is the first valedictorian in the history of the province's excellent student competition.

"The teachers in the whole school were excited and moved. Few people expected that the valedictorian of Information Technology was a student from the province," said Mr. Trinh.

Hau is also a rare 10th grader to win first prize in the exam for 12th graders. Of the 14 valedictorians, he is the youngest.

The national IT exam took place at the end of December, with 6 tests divided into two days. Of these, tests 3 and 6 made Hau the most regretful. He focused for more than an hour on test 3 but could not do anything. On the second day of the exam, the male student spent a lot of time on tests 4 and 5, leaving only 15 minutes for test 6, so the result was not complete. According to Hau, the test-taking strategy is something he needs to adjust and learn from for the next exams.

Hau's journey to IT started in 3rd grade. One time, by chance, he entered the IT room at Tan Hoi Primary School and saw a computer running software that could drag and drop commands to make the character run as desired. Later, Hau learned that it was the Scratch programming language, for students aged 8-16.

The school's IT teacher at that time, Nguyen Thi Nghia, saw that the student was interested, so she created conditions for him to try his hand and put him on the district-level youth IT training team. After passing the district round, she sent more articles and exam questions for Hau to practice for the provincial and then national level exams.

"Simply because I liked it and did well, I just kept reading and solving problems, without thinking about awards or majoring in IT," Hau said.

In addition to the lessons she assigned, the male student explored more IT knowledge on Youtube and other platforms. Seeing Hau's potential, the teacher asked her colleagues at Thang Long High School for the Gifted to support him with additional documents and exam questions for the student to practice.

In 6th grade, one time when he saw his 8th and 9th graders in the gifted student team practicing, Hau was curious so he approached them and tried to solve the problem. This caught the attention of the teachers, who chose him to join the team for training.

"When studying IT, I feel very interested and comfortable, and I feel the fun when I solve difficult problems," Hau said. That's why when he took the 10th grade entrance exam, the male student was determined to enter the IT specialized class. Thanks to his solid foundation, he was able to study with the team of Thang Long High School for the Gifted to prepare for the national exam.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, Head of the IT Department, Thang Long High School for the Gifted, said Hau is a bright gem and was lucky to be discovered in time by primary and secondary school teachers.

He said that during a training session for IT teachers in the province, a teacher at Tan Hoi Primary School mentioned a "very good seed" and asked him to nurture her further. That year, Hau was the first primary school student from Lam Dong to win first prize in the national youth IT competition.

At Tan Hoi Secondary School, IT teacher Nguyen Van Trong saw Hau's outstanding ability and convinced the principal to write a letter asking for support from Thang Long Specialized School. Teacher Tuan was assigned by the school to train Hau online.

"Teaching online has many difficulties, but Hau studies very seriously and learns quickly. Today's achievements are thanks to his self-study ability and determination," said Mr. Tuan.

According to the teacher, Hau is good at Math, IT and English. In middle school, he studied IT specialized knowledge in high school. In grade 8, he won first prize in the youth IT competition, in grade 9 he participated in the National IT Olympiad, the category for non-specialized high school students and won second prize.

"Talent does not wait for age. I am willing to guide and expand as much as you can absorb, but Hau himself is also very modest," said teacher Tuan.

Hau said that the national valedictorian achievement is a great encouragement for him, but this is just a competition, so nothing can be confirmed. In the upcoming journey, he wants to try with each specific goal, first of all is the selection round for the Olympic team. Hau assessed that his strongest part is data structure, his weakest part is graphs and some solutions, so he needs to improve in this part.
