(NLDO)- In the English as a Second Language International GCSE, the excellent achievement rate of Vietnamese students is 54%, far surpassing the global rate of 25%.

On March 15, EMG Education Group held a ceremony to award Pearson Edexcel International General Certificates including iPrimary International Primary Certificate, iLowerSecondary International Secondary Certificate and International GCSE to more than 700 students of the integrated English program.

Outstanding achievements of Vietnamese students

In the Pearson Edexcel International General Certificate exam granted by the British Examination Board Pearson Edexcel, in 2024, students in grades 5, 9 and 11 of the integrated English program achieved high results compared to their peers in the region and the world.

Award for excellent students

Specifically, in the Edexcel International Person Math exam, 99% of students achieved "pass" results at all three levels, of which 80% achieved good or above. At the secondary level, 74% of students achieved good and excellent math scores, higher than the global rate of 49%. 100% of high school students taking the International GCSE exam achieved results in all three subjects: English - Math - Science. Of which, the rate of students achieving perfect scores in math was 35%, higher than the global rate of 20%. In addition, in English as a Second Language (ESL), the rate of students achieving excellent scores was 54%, twice as high as the global rate of 24%. The rate of students achieving excellent scores in science was 54%, higher than the global rate of 36%.

In addition, in the above exam, 11 students in the integrated English program won the Outstanding Pearson Learner Awards (students with the highest scores in Vietnam in each subject), and 33 students won the Excellence Awards (students with excellent scores in all three subjects: math, English and science).

In particular, the two students with the highest achievements are Tran Ha Thanh Truc, Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted, who achieved a perfect score (9 on the international scale of 1-9) in all three subjects, including the highest score in English in Vietnam, and Van Hoang Minh Anh, Le Quy Don Secondary School (District 3), currently a 10th grade student at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, who achieved the highest score in math in the world.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City and representative of Pearson Education Group awarded certificates and prizes to the two students with the highest achievements.

Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, Dr. Nguyen Van Hieu, said that the integrated English program was approved by the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee to be implemented under Project 5695 "Teaching and learning math, science and English integrating the British and Vietnamese programs" since 2014, and has been in development for 10 years. "This is a breakthrough project in improving English proficiency for students in Ho Chi Minh City, in addition to teaching English as a regular foreign language, but also teaching math and science in English according to a high-quality program framework, scientifically integrated between the Vietnamese general education program and the British program, from which students can enjoy the superiority of both education systems, with the output being internationally recognized certificates, typically the Pearson Edexcel international certificate" - Mr. Hieu said.

The success of Project 5695 is the premise for implementing Conclusion No. 91.

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, recently, the Politburo also issued Conclusion 91, in which it directed to gradually make English the second language in schools. The successful implementation of the integrated English program over the past 10 years has shown the strategic vision of Ho Chi Minh City leaders in improving foreign language proficiency, and the achievements of students in international certification exams today are also one of the specific evidences of the effectiveness of the program, thereby providing the basis for continuing to expand the application of the program, realizing the direction of Conclusion 91 to make English the second language in schools.

Mr. Cao Thanh Binh - Head of the Culture and Social Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Council (right cover) and Mr. James Moran, representative of EMG Education, presented awards to outstanding students.

Mr. David Albon - Director of International Programs of Pearson Education Group, said that the success of Project 5695 is clearly demonstrated through the outstanding achievements of the program's students. In International GCSE Mathematics, if in 2019, 75% of students achieved 7-9 points, an excellent score according to the international scale, higher than the global average of 55%, then by 2024, the rate of excellent scores of Vietnamese students had increased to 84%, much higher than the global average of 54%. Most notably, in the International GCSE English as a Second Language subject, the rate of students achieving excellent scores for the year was 54%, completely surpassing the global rate of 25%. "With Conclusion 91 of the Vietnamese Politburo on gradually making English the second language in schools, we can see that the integrated English program is a leading example in improving the quality of education in Vietnam," said Mr. David Albon.

Students with the highest math scores in the world: English is an important language

Van Hoang Minh Anh, a student at Le Quy Don Secondary School (District 3), currently a 10th grader at CATH1 at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, achieved the highest math score in the world.

Van Hoang Minh Anh , a student at Le Quy Don Secondary School (District 3), currently a 10th grader at CATH1, Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, achieved the highest math score in the world. He shared that the above result still surprised him because he thought there were many other people who were better than him.

According to Minh Anh, for the integrated English program, in class, teachers do not simply teach theory, but also organize activities to make students interested in learning. The knowledge taught is selective, has a roadmap and is improved every year. To achieve the results like today, it is thanks to perseverance and time arrangement.

"For studying, time management and organization are very important. In class, when the teacher lectures, I try to concentrate to immediately understand the knowledge in class. Especially after each class, I spend time doing homework and reviewing the knowledge I learned that day. " Balancing between studying and playing is also very important. As a student at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, people will think that students only know how to bury their heads in studying, but in fact, in addition to studying, I also play sports, spend time reading books, and drawing to improve my soft skills" - Minh Anh shared.

According to Minh Anh, in order to study effectively, her notebook may not be neat and clean because she often notes down the issues the teacher points out. That is what helps her remember the lesson for a long time. This makes her interested and helps her to find more information.

Before important exams, I consolidate the main content and review the notes I have taken throughout the study process. From there, I will have broader knowledge and grasp the main information. "For me, learning never stops, so I will continue to improve. English is an important language, the key to open the door to the world" - Minh Anh said.
