(CLO) On the afternoon of December 2, in Hanoi, a press conference was held to launch Vietnam's first Broadway musical, "Giác Mơ Chí Phèo", inspired by the short story by writer Nam Cao.
The musical "Chi Pheo's Dream" is a passionate project carried out after many years of incubation, by the geniuses: musician, producer Duong Cam, screenwriter Dinh Tien Dung and director, Meritorious Artist Phung Tien Minh and art director People's Artist Huynh Tan Minh.

According to producer Duong Cam, “Giác Mơ Chí Phèo” is a musical with a strong international Broadway flavor. For the first time, a Broadway play inspired by Vietnamese literature has been performed, satisfying the Vietnamese people's desire for the Broadway dream of "musical made in Vietnam".
Duong Cam said that Vietnamese literary materials used in other creative works such as music, cinema, and painting have never been strange. Telling Vietnamese literary stories in Western theatrical language in Vietnam is also no longer rare.
But for the musical genre, literature is indeed a fertile "gold mine". In the world, famous musicals inspired and adapted from classic literary works are well received and have great influence on many audiences. Examples include: Les Misérables by writer Victor Hugo and the Broadway musical of the same name, Dreamgrils, Countess Mariza (Grafin Mariza), ...
The role of Thi No in "Vu Dai Village" was performed excellently by the young artist.
Talking about the reason for making the musical "Giác Mơ Chí Phèo", producer Duong Cam said: "Among many "dishes" of art and entertainment, I think musicals are the trend of enjoyment for the audience. Up to now, we have made musicals, however, from the perspective of a musician, I think those musicals have not yet achieved the "Broadway standard" factor. From the actual needs and desires of the Vietnamese public to enjoy Vietnamese musicals according to international musical standards. We strive to turn "Giác Mơ Chí Phèo" into a musical brand made in Vietnam".
Commenting on this musical, screenwriter Dinh Tien Dung expressed: “Adapting a classic work by writer Nam Cao has many advantages because the characters and plot are very clear. The story of Chi Pheo is very meaningful because it honors love and human values: thanks to love, a demon can become a human, thanks to love, a silly girl can also become a human. The fact that we keep mentioning it in the play “We want to be normal people” is that sometimes being a normal person is very difficult for many people."

Screenwriter Dinh Tien Dung said that when he received the invitation from Duong Cam and People's Artist Tan Minh, he was extremely excited, because this was also something he had wanted to fulfill for many years.
“I want to adapt the work Chi Pheo into a musical with a Vietnamese brand, a way of expressing it that is close to the entertainment needs of the audience. We want to make it new and attractive so that everyone who goes to see it can have an interesting and wonderful artistic experience. This is definitely a musical that you will find worth watching" - Screenwriter Dinh Tien Dung added.
The musical is expected to officially premiere at 8:00 p.m. on December 23, 2024 at Ho Guom Theater (Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi).
