Considered a "gold mine" that is always full, this strong commodity of Vietnam brought in 1.58 billion USD in just 2 months when the price reached a historical peak.
According to the latest information from the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in February, Vietnam exported about 150,000 tons of coffee, earning 854.2 million USD, breaking the record of 729 million USD in January this year.
Accordingly, in just the first two months of the year, Vietnamese enterprises exported 284,000 tons of coffee, reaching a value of 1.58 billion USD. Compared to the same period last year, the export of this commodity, considered as “brown gold”, of our country decreased by 28.4% in volume but increased by 26.2% in value.
The reason is that the average export price of coffee in the past two months is estimated at 5,575 USD/ton, a sharp increase of 76.3% over the same period in 2024.
In the world market, the price of Robusta coffee (Vietnam's coffee with the world's largest output) has continuously increased sharply and reached a historical peak of 5,817 USD/ton on February 13. Although the price has cooled down in recent days, on March 3, it was still at a high of 5,330 USD/ton for the May 2025 delivery period.
Meanwhile, in the Vietnamese market, the price of green coffee beans reached a historic peak of VND134,000/kg a few days ago. On March 3, this item was purchased at VND128,000-130,000/kg.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Germany, Italy and Japan are the three largest coffee consuming markets of Vietnam, accounting for 16.6%, 9.4% and 8.2% market shares respectively. Compared to the same period last year, the value of coffee exports in January 2025 to the German market increased by 53%, to the Italian market by 5.6% and to the Japanese market by 10.4%.
Among the 15 largest export markets, coffee export value increased the most in the Polish market with a 2.9-fold increase.
According to experts, in addition to world political and economic factors, coffee prices remain high due to market supply and demand factors.
This is because global demand for this commodity remains on an upward trend, while Brazil's coffee production is forecast to decrease due to drought. Vietnam also witnessed a 10-15% decrease in the recent harvest. This has led to a decrease in inventories.
The Brazilian Coffee Industry Association also recently stated that in the next few months, world coffee prices will continue to increase because coffee cultivation in Brazil - a country that accounts for nearly half of the world's output - has struggled over the past four years due to extreme weather, seriously affecting crops and productivity.
Notably, Brazil’s coffee harvest is still months away, and Vietnam’s crop has just ended a few days ago. Therefore, coffee prices will continue to “swing at the top” in the coming time as the market prepares to enter a period of low supply.
In Vietnam, authorities estimate that this year's total coffee output will reach 1.95 million tons, equivalent to 2024.
When it comes to Vietnamese agricultural products, including coffee, Mr. Phan Minh Thong - CEO of Phuc Sinh Group - emphasized that there is no mineral mine that can be exploited endlessly with great profit value like agriculture. Pepper, coffee or other agricultural products are like treasures that can be exploited forever without worrying about being exhausted; the important thing is whether there is a sustainable development strategy or not. If done properly, agricultural companies will not only help to enrich the country's ecosystem but also make money.
Regarding coffee, Mr. Thong said that the world's coffee roasters will flock to Vietnam and Indonesia to buy this product. Therefore, there is still room for price increases in the near future.
From positive market signals, Mr. Thong expects coffee exports to earn more than 6 billion USD, even 7 billion USD in 2025.
Speaking to the press on the afternoon of March 3, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Phung Duc Tien said that coffee is one of the agricultural export products with the highest growth rate despite a sharp decrease in sales. He expected coffee export turnover to reach 6 billion USD this year.
However, to achieve this goal, he said it is necessary to invest heavily in science and technology and deep processing.
“We are still exporting in bags - raw goods, while other countries export products in packages - deeply processed goods a lot,” the Deputy Minister reiterated, emphasizing that added value lies in the deep processing stage.
Currently, it is difficult to increase the coffee area, so we must improve productivity and the raw material area needs to be linked to deep processing. The Deputy Minister pointed out that this is the room we need to promote to achieve the export target by 2025.
