Durian prices today, October 3, suddenly increased again, up to 10,000 VND/kg in major growing areas across the country.
August and September 2024 are the peak durian harvest times in the Central Highlands such as Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Lam Dong; while durian output in the Mekong Delta provinces gradually decreases at the end of the favorable season.
The durian output harvested in August 2024 is estimated at 222.5 thousand tons, an increase of 105.8 thousand tons compared to July 2024; of which: Dak Lak reached 85 thousand tons (an increase of 54 thousand tons), Tien Giang harvested 48 thousand tons (an increase of 23 thousand tons), Lam Dong 28 thousand tons (an increase of 13 thousand tons), Can Tho was 4 thousand tons (a decrease of 1 thousand tons), Gia Lai was 6.8 thousand tons (a decrease of 1.2 thousand tons), Dak Nong harvested 11 thousand tons.
Increased supply caused prices of this fruit to fall in August and September compared to July 2024.
However, in October, durian prices began to fluctuate. Today, October 3, durian prices suddenly increased sharply again, up to 10,000 VND/kg in major growing areas across the country. Meanwhile, businesses rushed to register and continue to be licensed to export durian to China.
China is currently the number 1 potential market for exporting fresh and frozen durian from Vietnam. From August 2024, China officially opened its market to Vietnamese durian, through the signing of a protocol allowing the frozen durian segment to be imported into this country. This is a "golden" opportunity for durian, thereby, the industry will be enhanced in value, avoiding risks when depending on the export of fresh products.
According to the Plant Protection Department, with the recently signed Protocol, current capacity and demand of the Chinese market, it is forecasted that Vietnam's frozen durian export turnover in 2024 could reach 300 million USD if business registration is completed early and exports can be made soon.
Notably, a representative of the Plant Protection Department said that it is estimated that China imports fresh durian worth 7 billion USD each year. It is expected that in the next few years, the import turnover of the king of fruits of this billion-people market will exceed 10 billion USD.
Confident with positive predictions, experts evaluate the strengths of frozen durian. Accordingly, fresh durian is only 30% flesh, 70% seeds, the shell must be removed and pollutes the environment. Therefore, the consumer trend in China will soon switch to frozen products. Frozen durian has a long shelf life, can be used immediately or used as an ingredient for other products, so it will be popular in the near future.
In the first draft, China requires cold storage for 8 hours. Referring to the regulations of Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam proposed a cold storage plan of -18 degrees for 1 hour. This is a favorable condition for businesses to apply deep and fast freezing technology. This technology is modern, keeping durian fresh for a long time.
Obviously, with new factors, Vietnam's fruit and vegetable exports will be promoted, besides the world market's demand for fruit and vegetables will also increase in the last quarter of the year, especially for durian to the Chinese market.
In 2024, durian exports are forecast to increase to more than 3.2 billion USD, an increase of 45% compared to 2023. In the whole year of 2024, our fruit and vegetable export turnover is forecast to reach over 6.5 - 6.6 billion USD, an increase of more than 17% compared to 2023.
