Pig price today January 15
* Pig prices in the Northern region remained stable today.
Currently, live pigs in Lao Cai, Nam Dinh, Ha Nam and Ninh Binh provinces are being purchased at the lowest price in the region at 52,000 VND/kg.
Traders in the remaining localities maintained live pig trading at 53,000 VND/kg.
Today's live pig price in the North fluctuates between 52,000 - 53,000 VND/kg.
* The pig market in the Central and Central Highlands regions has not recorded any new changes in price.
Accordingly, the price of live pigs in Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Dak Lak and Ninh Thuan provinces is 49,000 VND/kg, the lowest in the region.
Meanwhile, the three provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Ha Tinh have the highest live pig price of 51,000 VND/kg.
The remaining provinces maintain stable live pig trading at 50,000 VND/kg.
Currently, the purchase price of live pigs in the Central and Central Highlands regions is around 49,000 - 51,000 VND/kg.
* In the South, pig prices also stagnated following the general trend.
Specifically, traders in Long An, Vinh Long and Ca Mau are purchasing live pigs at the corresponding price of 51,000 - the highest in the region.
The remaining localities in the region have stable pork prices in the range of 49,000 - 50,000 VND/kg.
The price of live pigs in the Southern region today fluctuates between 49,000 - 51,000 VND/kg.
* Mr. Nguyen Van Trong, former Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry, said that pressure from the supply side is increasing because recently many small-scale farmers have sold pigs to "escape the epidemic", which has prevented prices from increasing even when Tet is approaching.
On the demand side, consumption remains low. “The income situation of many people has not improved due to the impact of economic difficulties. Pork consumption in collective kitchens has not recovered yet,” said Mr. Trong. In addition, the trend of diversifying other meat products such as poultry and seafood is also affecting demand for this item.
Mr. Trong estimated that demand near Tet this year will only increase by about 5 - 10%, lower than the level of about 15% in previous years.
In addition, the price fluctuation difference between retail price and market price of live pigs (retail price remains high even though live pig price has decreased sharply) also partly affects the demand for pork consumption.
Supply and demand pressures have made Vietnam's live pig prices lower than many countries in the region. According to Genesus, as of December 6, the Philippines is still the country with the highest live pig price in the world, reaching more than 76,400 VND/kg. China ranks second with an average price of nearly 50,000 VND/kg. Meanwhile, Vietnam's pig price has dropped to third place, reaching 48,600 VND/kg, a price equivalent to Thailand's.
