That is the result of a new survey conducted by research company Workplace Intelligence and talent development company INTOO.

Researchers surveyed 1,600 full-time employees from November to December 2023 about their career advancement experiences. Of the group, 18% were Gen Z.

Gen Z wants to talk to superiors more

The survey found that 47% of Gen Z said they would turn to AI or ChatGPT for better career advice than what their managers would share, while 55% said they would use social media.

As many as 62% of Gen Z employees wish they could talk to their managers more often about career development, but most leaders are too busy. On the other hand, many millennials feel their superiors don’t care enough about their career development to give them insightful advice.

As the fastest-growing demographic, Generation Z is reshaping some industry norms. They expect more from their employers than previous generations, including better advice, better benefits, and more learning opportunities.

Gen Z isn't the only one unhappy with their managers. Four in 10 employees say their boss gave them "bad" career advice, across all ages.

Getting bad advice at work has more consequences than you might think. First, it can hinder your career progression. 67% of those surveyed said they stayed in a job that wasn’t a good fit for them, or were passed over for a promotion and/or raise because of bad advice.

Provide opportunities for employee development

The consequences of ignoring employee growth are clear. About 25% of all employees, and 44% of Gen Z employees, plan to leave their jobs within the next six months because of a lack of career development support from their company.

“If I were in HR, I would point this out,” Greenland stressed. “With a lack of training, companies are losing people because they’re not having career development conversations.”

Many programs that offer advancement opportunities can also help retain employees. About 80% of employees and 97% of Gen Z say that having the best learning and development (L&D) opportunities improves their engagement, job satisfaction, motivation, and likelihood of staying with a company. However, only 22% of employees and 41% of HR leaders believe their company’s L&D programs are “excellent.”

Some employers may be concerned about the cost of investing in a new L&D program. However, according to a Gallup report, the cost of replacing a new employee can cost between 0.5 and 2 times the annual salary of a current employee. Therefore, it is better to build an effective L&D program and less expensive than risking having to replace an employee who leaves.

Why do young people choose robots instead of humans?

Gen Z is used to getting constant personalized feedback on everything in their lives, from social media feeds to smartwatches, says Mira Greenland, chief revenue officer at INTOO.

They expect the same experience in the workplace. When employers fail to meet that expectation, they naturally turn to other means. “Millennials are getting personalized experiences in all areas of their lives. And they’re looking for that in the workplace,” she says.

Part of the problem may also be that many managers are promoted because they are high-performing employees. However, they often lack the training needed to lead a team, including not having regular conversations with employees about career development.

Gen Z nghĩ họ giỏi hơn bạn? Gen Z thinks they are better than you?

That was one of the comments (and complaints) from business managers when participating in a survey in April 2023.
