The experiential program "Legend of Youth" about 10 female Youth Volunteers at Dong Loc crossroads, played by Gen Zers themselves, also attracted many Gen Z audiences.
The experiential program "Legend of Youth" about 10 female Youth Volunteers at Dong Loc intersection (Dong Loc town, Can Loc district, Ha Tinh province) was officially launched by the Vietnam Women's Museum in collaboration with Le Quy Duong Stage in October 2023, aiming to educate the younger generation about the spirit of "Living a life worth living" of their ancestors.
The highlight of the program is the reenactment of historical stories about heroic Vietnamese women, full of youthfulness and indomitable fighting spirit in the space of the Vietnamese Women's Museum (No. 36 Ly Thuong Kiet Street, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi).
This is a place that connects and displays many souvenirs and images of flowers on the front lines of the battlefield - which will contribute to connecting and adding to interactive activities to enhance the experience for the public and visitors who want to learn about stories associated with the history of Vietnamese women.
The actors participating in the program are between 18 and 24 years old, the same age as the 10 female youth martyrs at Dong Loc T-junction. The selection process focuses on the authenticity, emotion and sensitivity of the role. Each character has their own personality and psychology, but they always have in common the innocence, love of life, idealism and gentleness, resilience of Vietnamese women.
The special thing is that most of them are students, all of the Gen Z age group (born from 1997 - 2010), not stage actors. This is the director's intention so that the new faces can play their roles with the utmost purity. When acting, the actors are also not allowed to show any signs of makeup, and learn to speak with a Central accent. The director is so meticulous that he organizes a trip for 10 actors to the place where the female Youth Volunteers sacrificed their lives, to visit their graves to burn incense for them.
Actress Nguyen Nhu Ngoc (23 years old) said: “I am very honored to be chosen to play the role of martyr TNXP Vo Thi Tan (1944 - 1968), Squad Leader of Squad 4, Company 552, General Team 55. Although we are the same age as the girls at that time, we did not live in that historical period, to understand and sympathize with the hardships and difficulties when carrying out the task of bomb disposal and road opening. They steadfastly held on, fought for every inch of land, cleared away the rocks and soil to ensure the important traffic route was connected smoothly. So to act emotionally and naturally is a very difficult problem. But above all, especially on the occasion of March 8, with deep gratitude, we tried to act well to serve the audience. Also in this process, we are increasingly aware of the role of the younger generation to continue the glorious tradition of previous generations, to devote ourselves, to commit ourselves. Step up and promote your creativity to build the country".
The scriptwriter of the experience program is director Le Quy Duong (born in 1968). The message of the program 'Legend of Youth' about 10 female heroes and youth volunteers on the Dong Loc T-junction battlefield is 'Living a life worth living'. This also raises the question, how have we lived, are living and will live to have a life 'worth living'?", director Le Quy Duong shared with the press.
The original purpose was to perform a play in a miniature stage format and mainly to serve tourists, serving veterans and former Youth Volunteers for free in 2 time frames (from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.) every Saturday and Sunday. However, after nearly 1.5 years of organizing performances, the program has created an impressive attraction on the historical theme, becoming a familiar meeting place for Hanoians, domestic and foreign tourists, especially for young people of the Gen Z generation.
“On the occasion of the 115th anniversary of International Women's Day (March 8, 1910 - March 8, 2025), the program opened on Friday (March 7), when I heard the news, I decided to participate. I was really touched and proud of the previous generation of Vietnamese girls and women. Through that, the program inspired me to develop myself and actively participate in contributing to building society", Nguyen Thuy Linh (right cover, 22 years old, living in Dong Da district, Hanoi) shared.
In a space not intended for a stage (this place was originally a conference room), director Le Quy Duong brought different feelings. With a floor area of 200m2, the actors and the audience have never been so close together, sometimes only half a meter apart, the feeling is as real as witnessing a story more than half a century ago. Thanks to that, the program has created attraction and is considered one of the 15 attractive night tourism products of Hanoi.
The 10 female youth volunteers at Dong Loc Intersection belonged to Squad 4, Company 552, General Squad 55, including: Vo Thi Tan (24 years old, Squad Leader), Ho Thi Cuc (24 years old, Deputy Squad Leader), Nguyen Thi Nho (24 years old), Duong Thi Xuan (21 years old), Vo Thi Hoi (20 years old), Nguyen Thi Xuan (20 years old), Ha Thi Xanh (19 years old), Tran Thi Huong (19 years old), Tran Thi Rang (18 years old), Vo Thi Ha (17 years old), they fell at a very young age. Along with them, there were more than 4,000 heroic martyrs who lay down their lives on this vital road.
All of them died when they were in their late teens or early twenties and none of them were married. Remembering the heroic spirit of the 10 girls at Dong Loc T-junction, on June 7, 1972, the President posthumously awarded the title of Labor Hero to the squad of 10 girls. Today, the younger generation has continued to follow their example and continue to write unfinished aspirations so that the indomitable spirit and fearlessness of the generations of young volunteers will continue to be passed on to the future.
On July 24, 1968, at exactly 12 noon at Dong Loc Intersection (now Dong Loc town, Can Loc district, Ha Tinh province), 10 female youth volunteers led by Ms. Vo Thi Tan as Squad Leader had not yet had time to eat, and hurried out to the road to fill bomb craters. At 4 pm that same day, enemy bombs rained down heavily, aiming straight at the target where the women were working on the road. The girls took shelter in the nearest bunker by the roadside, waiting for the plane to pass by to continue their mission. Suddenly a series of bombs fell, the bunker collapsed, and everyone was killed.
