On September 18, Quang Ngai Province Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital announced that doctors from the Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Quang Ngai Province Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, had just performed an emergency esophagogastric endoscopy, using anesthesia, successfully removing a foreign object from a 3-year-old boy (in Binh Tan Phu commune, Binh Son district).
According to the boy's mother, on the evening of September 15, he took his father's headlamp to play with. The next morning, he told his mother that he had swallowed his father's battery and asked her how to get it out. After hearing this, the family was extremely worried and took the boy to the hospital for a check-up.
The child was then admitted to the hospital, where doctors examined him, took X-rays, and performed an ultrasound to determine the location of the foreign object in his digestive tract. Immediately afterwards, the child was transferred to the Department of Anesthesia and Resuscitation so that the Pediatric Gastroenterology Department could perform a procedure to remove the foreign object.
After 30 minutes, the doctors successfully removed the metal foreign object, identified as a 4cm long screw, from the child's stomach.
Doctor CKII Nguyen Thi My Le, in charge of the Department of Gastroenterology, Quang Ngai Province Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, said that the process of removing the foreign object from the child patient was difficult because the foreign object was smooth and round. However, fortunately, the patient was treated early, otherwise the foreign object could have gone down to the intestines, causing intestinal perforation and bleeding, and surgery would have been required.
"If parents have time, they should play with their children or observe them while they play. Avoid letting children come into contact with or play with sharp objects, coins, nails, screws, etc. If they discover that their child has swallowed a foreign object, they should take the child to a medical facility for examination and treatment," Dr. Le advised.
