Most provinces and cities organize exams for 3 subjects to enter public grade 10 including Math, Literature, English, but Bac Giang only organizes exams for 4 subjects.
By mid-February, 17 provinces and cities had announced the admission form and entrance exam subjects for grade 10.
In addition to Math and Literature, most localities choose English as the third subject. Some localities with developed socio-economic conditions such as Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City organize foreign language exams, so that candidates can expand their options beyond English. Lao Cai, a northern border province, allows candidates to choose English or Chinese.
There are also three entrance exams for grade 10, but Ninh Binh does not specify the third subject. This exam will be one of the following subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, English, announced on March 1.
Compared to last year, the number of subjects in Ninh Binh has decreased by two, because the province decided to eliminate the combined exam. Two other localities are similar, Hung Yen and Vinh Phuc. Therefore, to date, Bac Giang is the locality that organizes the most subjects for public 10th grade entrance exams, with Math, Literature, English and a fourth subject.

Quang Nam province has not announced its 10th grade enrollment plan, but plans to eliminate the selection process after 11 years of application to avoid the problem of embellishing academic records. The exam is expected to include three subjects: Math, Literature and English. If approved by the provincial People's Committee, about 25,000 9th grade students will take the exam.
For the specialized system, all localities organize entrance exams. Candidates wishing to enter this system will have to take an additional specialized subject exam. This year, provinces have eliminated non-specialized classes in specialized schools (also known as near-specialized classes), according to new regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training.

According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, the enrollment of public grade 10 students is decided by the locality. The Department of Education and Training is the advisory body, submitting to the People's Committee of the province or city for approval of the number of subjects, form of examination or selection.
In the 2022-2024 school year plan, the Ministry requires localities to consider recognizing junior high school graduation for students before June 30 and complete primary school enrollment before July 31.
