Parents and students count down to the announcement of the third exam subject

“Today is February 19, there are at most 9 more days…”, Ms. Nguyen Thu Huong (Ba Dinh District, Hanoi) is impatient, counting the days waiting for the Hanoi Department of Education and Training to announce the 3rd subject of the 10th grade entrance exam for public high schools, so that her child’s review is not as stressful as it is now.

While more than 40 provinces and cities across the country have announced the third exam subject for grade 10, Hanoi is still... "calm" and has not made an official announcement. Like Ms. Huong, many parents of students in grade 9 are also counting down to the deadline for localities to announce the third exam subject (February 28).

At the Central press conference on the morning of February 18, a representative of the Ministry of Education and Training said that it is expected that in February, all provinces and cities across the country will announce the third subject in the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year.

Every day, whenever she has free time, Ms. Huong updates the news and visits educational forums to see if there is any news about the third exam subject. "My child and I are like sitting on a bed of fire. In addition to focusing on the three subjects of Math, Literature, and English, my child still spends more time studying other subjects when the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has not yet 'finalized' the third subject. Studying many subjects makes my child always feel overloaded."

Ms. Huong said that she and the parents in her child's class were "excited" when their children in their final year of high school had to face so many challenges. "The whole week, the children were 'bewildered' because they stopped taking extra classes at school. They were used to having teachers to guide and tutor them, so now they don't know how to cope. I am very worried because my child's Literature is not good. I planned to hire a tutor to help my child study, but I think the tutor does not know about the new program to teach my child. My child has to take exams according to the new program and is banned from taking extra classes at school, I am worried that my child's exam results will not be good."

Ms. Huong said that at this time, she is very tired when having to find ways to support her child in the final stage (finding extra study places, reminding her child to study...). She just hopes that the Department of Education and Training will soon announce the third exam subject so that parents and students can focus and put their efforts into the right 3 subjects.

When asked about the third exam, Nguyen Phuong Anh (grade 9, Dong Anh, Hanoi) said dejectedly that many students like her feel frustrated when having to "live in wait". "We have to study Math, Literature, English, and review the remaining 4 subjects because we don't know which ones to take. I really hope the Department will announce it soon so that we can focus on reviewing more effectively."

Phuong Anh said that, besides looking forward to Hanoi announcing the third exam subject, the thing that she and many of her friends are most worried about is "not knowing where to take extra classes". "Before, I only took extra classes at school to review for the 10th grade entrance exam. Now that the school has banned extra classes, my mother has not found a new extra class for me. In Dong Anh, there are not many exam preparation centers like in the inner city of Hanoi. I also asked about 1 or 2 centers quite far from home but they were all full. Many of my classmates are also very confused, not knowing if they can get into the school they want."

Not having found a tutoring class yet, Phuong Anh is trying to study on her own. However, according to Phuong Anh, with the new curriculum and new exam questions, self-study is quite difficult. "My friends and I just hope to have teachers to guide us so we can be more confident and less stressed before this very stressful exam," Phuong Anh said.
