Disagreements among members on current world political issues and on the overall agenda of the entire forum for the future will certainly make it very difficult for Brazil, as the current rotating president of the G20, to succeed in this responsibility.
G20 foreign ministers meeting in Brazil on February 22
On the surface, the main disagreements among the member groups revolve around the conflict in Ukraine, Russia's position and role in the G20, and the relationship between the G20 and each member with Russia. In addition, the Hamas-Israel conflict is also a divisive issue. This conflict became particularly sensitive in world politics and international relations after South Africa brought Israel to the International Court of Justice. Then, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is also the G20 President, himself said that the way Israel acted in the Gaza Strip was similar to the Nazi genocide of Jews in Europe at the beginning of the last century.
In the past two years, when Indonesia and India held the rotating presidency of the G20, the Western and pro-Western G20 members tried to turn the entire G20 into an anti-Russian forum. Now, this group is trying to make Mr. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva not focus too much on the war in the Gaza Strip and less on the conflict in Ukraine. Therefore, it is difficult for the G20 to have internal consensus to strengthen and promote its role in world politics. However, Mr. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is still highly regarded for the role and influence of the members of the "Global South" bloc in the G20.
