Coffee price today April 16, 2025: Unexpected strong increase

The coffee market is recording a strong increase as prices have experienced five consecutive sessions of increase since US President Donald Trump announced the temporary suspension of reciprocal tariffs on April 9. Between April 10 and April 15, the price of green coffee beans in the Central Highlands increased by more than VND12,000/kg, equivalent to about 10%, to VND129,300 - VND130,200/kg, approaching the high of VND133,000 - VND135,000/kg that appeared before trade tensions broke out.

The coffee market had previously fallen sharply due to the US imposing high tariffs on imported goods from many countries, including major coffee exporters such as Brazil, Vietnam and Colombia. This move raised concerns that the tax costs would be passed on to US consumers, in the context of high world coffee prices due to reduced supply.

However, when Mr. Trump announced a 90-day pause on new tariffs and kept the 10% rate, market sentiment improved significantly. Businesses and investors responded positively, helping global coffee prices recover quickly.

Besides policy factors, coffee prices were also supported by the weakness of the USD/DXY index, which is at its lowest level in more than 3 years, and robusta inventories on the London exchange have fallen to a 6-week low.

World coffee prices today

Coffee prices on the world market continue to increase sharply on both exchanges:

Robusta Coffee (London):

Delivery in May 2025: Up 84 USD/ton, to 5347 USD/ton.

Delivery in July 2025: Up 95 USD/ton, to 5334 USD/ton.

Arabica Coffee (New York):

May 2025 delivery: Up 7.2 cents/lb, to 367.6 cents/lb.

July 2025 delivery: Up 6.8 cents/lb, to 365.3 cents/lb.

Statistics from the Customs Department show that in March, Vietnam exported more than 181,000 tons of coffee, worth 1.06 billion USD. Although output decreased slightly compared to the same period in 2024, the value increased sharply by 58.1%. This is also the first time that Vietnam's coffee turnover has exceeded the 1 billion USD mark in a month.

According to a report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in the first quarter of 2025, total coffee export turnover reached 2.88 billion USD, up nearly 50% over the same period last year. The average export price reached 5,656 USD/ton, up more than 71%.

The main consumer markets for Vietnamese coffee are still European countries such as Germany, Spain, Italy, along with Japan, South Korea, China and some Asian countries. Meanwhile, the US only accounts for about 6% of total exports.

Mr. Nguyen Nam Hai, Chairman of VICOFA, said that this success is not only due to high selling prices but also comes from the strategy of expanding export markets of Vietnamese enterprises in the midst of many fluctuations in the global market.

Foreign-invested enterprises (FDI) also play an important role, accounting for 27% of the volume and 28% of the value of green coffee, and up to 86% of the value of processed coffee exports, demonstrating effective coordination between domestic and foreign enterprises.
