Vietnam Railways and Vietnam Chemical Group promote cooperation in transporting apatite ore and chemical fertilizers

On February 28, 2025, in Hanoi, Vietnam Railways Corporation (VNR) and Vietnam Chemical Group (Vinachem) held a conference to review the transportation of apatite, fertilizers and chemicals in 2024, and approved the transportation plan for 2025. Attending the conference were Mr. Hoang Gia Khanh - General Director of VNR, and Mr. Nguyen Huu Tu - General Director of Vinachem. This is an annual conference of the two enterprises to summarize, draw experiences, and improve cooperation efficiency.

In 2024, the apatite transportation output reached 111.6% of the same period in 2023, but only reached 91.02% of the plan. For chemical fertilizers and other commodity products, the transportation output in 2024 was generally very low compared to the plan and decreased significantly compared to the same period in 2023. The Steering Committee for the transportation of apatite and chemical fertilizers in 2024 assessed that the transportation methods of railway transport joint stock companies were not as convenient and diverse as automobile transportation, and had not been approached to suit the sales policies of units under the Vietnam Chemical Group, thus affecting the attraction of demand for railway transportation. Transport output in 2024 only reached 75.7% of the plan and equal to 85% of the same period in 2023. For its part, Hanoi Locomotive Enterprise and a number of other units of Vietnam Railways purchased about 18.7 tons of soap and detergent products from Hanoi Soap Joint Stock Company (HASO) with a value of 588 million VND.

The presentations of the delegates at the conference pointed out some remaining problems in the cooperation between the two sides. Notably, although the quality of the wagons has been improved, there are still holes in the floor and side of the wagons. Some wagons when put into the stacking process have to be cut and repaired, increasing the operation and time. Many wagons when put into the Mine Railway still have a lot of dirt, rocks and trash, so when put into the stacking process, especially with selected ores, they have to be cleaned again, causing many difficulties and prolonging the loading and unloading time. In addition, when transporting fertilizers at peak times, the allocation of wagons often does not keep up with the registered plan, and is also slow according to the season.

Receiving the comments of Vinachem delegates, Mr. Hoang Gia Khanh - General Director of VNR concluded to direct the units of Vietnam Railways to actively take action and find ways to quickly resolve the problems. He proposed that as soon as possible, he and the General Director of Vinachem will directly inspect and review the entire network of factories and member units of the Chemical Group to promptly detect difficulties and direct solutions to remove them. He committed that Vietnam Railways will not increase freight rates compared to 2024, strive to find all solutions to reduce costs and increase service capacity for Vietnam Chemical Group during peak season. The leader of Vietnam Railways affirmed that Vietnam Chemical Group is a traditional and especially important customer. He requested all member companies of Vietnam Railways to take action, in the spirit of effective service, ensuring competitiveness, especially compared to automobile transportation.

Meanwhile, the Vietnam Chemical Group proposed that the two sides should increase the exchange of goods, especially technical chemical products, rubber-related products in locomotive and wagon factories, and products directly for train safety, which are currently imported by Vietnam Railways, but are strong products and are being invested in and developed by the Vietnam Chemical Group.

Regarding the 2025 transportation plan, units under the Vietnam Chemical Group have registered a plan to transport 1,165,000 tons of apatite in 2025. Chemical fertilizers and other products will be registered quarterly, with 55,600 tons registered in the first quarter of 2025. Thus, the total volume of apatite and other products transported in 2025 is expected to be about 1,365,000 tons, equal to 116.8% compared to the implementation in 2024.
