On social network X , the German Foreign Ministry said the two sides had a phone call with "a special focus... on the incidents at the German consulate".
The two foreign ministers also discussed “their differing views on regional issues.” Ms. Baerbock called on Iran to play a greater role in de-escalating tensions in the current conflicts.
In late July 2020, a German citizen of Iranian origin, Jamshid Sharmahd, was arrested by Iranian authorities and sentenced to death earlier this year for his involvement in a deadly bombing in a square in Iran in 2008.
In April 2023, Iran's Supreme Court confirmed the death sentence against him. Germany responded by expelling two staff members from the Iranian Embassy in Berlin. In response, Tehran also expelled two German diplomats.
Iran is also holding another German-Iranian, Nahid Taghavi, who was sentenced to 10 years and eight months in prison in August 2021 on national security charges.
