Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said on October 19 that Israel's attacks on Lebanon and Gaza had forced Iran to take "legitimate actions." Fidan's comments appeared to express support for Tehran's missile attacks on Israel.
“Israel’s aggressive stance has forced Iran to take legitimate steps,” Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said at a joint press conference in Istanbul with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi.
Regarding the fighting on the ground, Hezbollah said it fired rockets at a military base near the northern Israeli city of Haifa on October 19. Hezbollah has threatened to intensify attacks on Israel for weeks as a full-scale war broke out on September 23.
On the same day, Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei declared that the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar would not stop the "Axis of Resistance" and Hamas would continue to exist.
"His passing is certainly a pain for the Axis of Resistance, but this front continues to advance despite the sacrifices of its prominent figures... Hamas is alive and will continue to exist," Khamenei said in a statement.
Sinwar, who was accused of being behind the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 last year - the event that sparked the war in Gaza - was killed on October 16 in a gun battle with Israeli forces after a year-long manhunt, and his death was announced a day later.
"He was the shining face of resistance and struggle. With iron determination, he stood up against the oppressors and invaders. With wisdom and courage, he dealt them an irreparable blow on October 7, an event that has been recorded in the history of this region," the Iranian Supreme Leader affirmed.
The “Axis of Resistance,” built over years with Iranian support, includes Hamas, Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthi movement in Yemen, and Shiite Muslim groups in Iraq and Syria. These groups see themselves as a resistance force against Israel and US influence in the Middle East.
"As always, we will stand by the sincere warriors and soldiers, with God's grace and help," Khamenei declared.
