Before entering the friendly tournament with U22 Korea, U22 Uzbekistan and host U22 China, U22 Vietnam was considered the weakest team, with little chance of competing for the championship. However, under the leadership of Acting Coach Dinh Hong Vinh, the team had an impressive performance, even exceeding the fans' expectations.
Vietnam U22 excellently held Korea U22 to a 1-1 draw in the opening match, then continued to share points with Uzbekistan U22 with a score of 0-0. After two matches, the team has a chance to compete for the championship if they win against China U22 in the final match.
Entering the crucial match, U22 Vietnam persisted with a defensive counter-attacking strategy. This strategy left the home team deadlocked and forced to concede a goal after Quoc Viet scored in the 31st minute. Although the opponent later equalized 1-1 from a controversial situation, overall, U22 Vietnam had a good match. If luckier, the team could have won and been crowned champion.
Despite not being able to win the championship due to the referee's confusing decision, U22 Vietnam still left a strong impression. Goalkeeper Van Binh won the title of "Best Goalkeeper", while the whole team ended the tournament with an undefeated record.
The highlight of U22 Vietnam is the ability to organize a solid defense, the smooth connection between the lines and the sharp transitions of attack. Among them, Victor Le stands out with his impressive performance.
Although this is the first time he has been called up, the Vietnamese-American midfielder from Ha Tinh Club has won the full trust of coach Dinh Hong Vinh. His skillful pass and assist for Quoc Viet to score against U22 China is a clear demonstration of this midfielder's class.
In addition, players who regularly play in the V-League and the First Division such as Nhat Minh, Victor Le, Phi Hoang, Van Truong, Thanh Nhan or Quoc Viet… also show good performance. This shows that if they continue to be trusted and given opportunities at the club, this generation of young players will develop even more strongly.
Commenting on the performance of U22 Vietnam, coach Dinh Hong Vinh shared: "This tournament helps the players accumulate more experience in international competition, especially how to deal with opponents with different physiques and playing styles. They have improved their ability to control the match, maintain concentration and enhance coordination in the tactical system. This experience will be very important in the preparation process for the upcoming U23 Asian Qualifiers and SEA Games."
Winning third place in the four-nation tournament in China is a positive sign for U22 Vietnam as the team is aiming to win the gold medal at the 33rd SEA Games later this year. From now until the SEA Games, the team still has a few training sessions to continue testing and perfecting the squad. If they maintain solidity in defense and improve their attacking ability, U22 Vietnam can absolutely win the gold medal in Thailand.
