C STRATEGY OF COACH K IM S ANG - S IK
The Vietnamese team took full advantage of the match against Ulsan Citizen (November 27) to test their personnel. In each half, coach Kim Sang-sik used a different formation to calculate the effectiveness of the playing style in each position, testing the adaptability of each student. Positive results appeared, when both of coach Kim's "teams" played well, helping the Vietnamese team win 2-0.
Coach Kim Sang-sik's habit of testing widely (in all positions) started with the friendly matches against Russia, Thailand and India in September and October. On the one hand, the Korean coach wanted to give maximum opportunities so that even the most inexperienced players could have at least 2 matches to prove their ability. But on the other hand, there are not many names that really impress to be named in the main squad. According to a member of the Vietnamese team, that creates a fair and exciting competitive atmosphere when all players have the opportunity to show themselves, from veterans, young players to those selected from the V-League.
However, as the 2024 AFF Cup approaches, Mr. Kim needs to quickly finalize the framework so that the Vietnamese team has a "backbone". Thanks to that, the team can outline a playing style with specific attacking, defensive and transitional tactics.
The match against a strong opponent like Daegu FC at 12 o'clock today is an opportunity for coach Kim Sang-sik to test the strength of "group 1", that is, the official squad. Established in 2002, Daegu FC has played 19 seasons in K-League 1 (the highest level of Korean football). The team's best achievement is third place in K-League 1 (2021) and the Korean FA Cup championship (2018). The team led by coach Park Chung-hyeon has participated in the AFC Champions League 3 times, with the furthest they have gone in the season being 2022 when they reached the round of 16.
What is special about Daegu FC is that this team is in the play-off stage to compete for a place in the K-League 1. Coach Park Chung-hyeon and his team will meet Ansan in the first and second leg matches, on November 28 and December 1 respectively. This means that Daegu FC may not field their strongest force in the match against the Vietnamese team. However, this team is in a state of having to compete, so any "test of fire" is an opportunity for the Korean representative to practice tactics for the play-off match. With an opponent with clear motivation, the Vietnamese team will be extremely challenged.
"T Ổ 1" DEPARTURES
The names expected to be in Mr. Kim's main squad are likely to play. They include goalkeeper Van Lam, defenders Viet Anh, Thanh Chung, Thanh Binh, midfielders Hoang Duc, Thanh Long, Quang Hai, two wings with Van Khang, Van Thanh, and the attack line with Tuan Hai and Tien Linh.
In theory, this is the ideal squad that coach Kim Sang-sik has, when converging experience, strength and explosiveness across three lines. However, coach Kim Sang-sik will combine new elements, especially in the second half to continue evaluating each player. Facing a physically strong opponent and accustomed to the cold climate in Korea like Daegu FC, the Vietnamese team will enter a fierce physical battle. This team also has a muscular style of play, leaning towards fast attacks and wing attacks, thus creating a difficult defensive problem for Kim Sang-sik's students. The Vietnamese team has conceded 8 goals in the last 5 friendly matches. To stand firm, the defenders must compete and stick better.
Gradually reduce the amount of exercise
Meeting a tough opponent is a golden opportunity for Tien Linh and his teammates to surpass the threshold. The Vietnamese team needs to break the inertia to improve fighting power and tactical discipline if they want to go far at the AFF Cup 2024. In the most recent training session, coach Kim Sang-sik continued to combine physical training and tactics to help his players warm up their muscles. The Vietnamese team will gradually reduce the amount of training to reach peak performance when entering the AFF Cup.
