Changing thinking about agricultural economics
In recent years, the term "agricultural production" has gradually given way to "agricultural economics" in the parlance of farmers, businesses and managers in Dak Nong.
This change is not simply a matter of language but represents a strong transformation in the thinking and actions of people, businesses and local authorities.

In the past, when talking about agriculture, people often only thought of cultivating, caring for and harvesting crops, that is, agricultural production.
However, with the development of the market and new challenges facing farmers, this concept is gradually becoming irrelevant.
Instead, the phrase "agricultural economics" began to appear and gradually became popular, expressing a new, more comprehensive view of the role of agriculture in the economy.
Unlike agricultural production which only focuses on the production stage, agricultural economics includes the entire value chain from production, processing, consumption to brand building and market development.

This requires farmers not only to know how to grow crops and raise livestock but also to have the ability to manage, do business and meet market needs.
Dak Nong farmers, with a long tradition of farming, have faced many difficulties when market prices fluctuated sharply, forcing them to do agricultural economics.
In the past, many farmers pursued "hot" crops, leading to a very common situation of "planting-cutting" trees. However, lessons from the past have made people realize the need to maintain stable cultivated areas and focus on product quality.
Thanks to the change in thinking, although the prices of key crops such as pepper, coffee, and rubber sometimes decreased sharply, the area for cultivating these crops was still maintained by people in production.

This is an important step forward, helping Dak Nong farmers no longer depend too much on market fluctuations, while creating conditions for farmers to focus on improving product quality.
2023 is a successful year for Dak Nong farmers when many crops have good harvests and product prices are high, especially for strong crops such as coffee, pepper, durian...
Although a bumper crop year cannot make up for all the hardships and difficulties farmers have gone through, it shows that their thinking and actions in agriculture are becoming more and more steadfast.
This success comes not only from the lucky factors brought by the weather and market, but also from a long process of investment, learning and changing production thinking and agricultural practices.
Positive signs
Dak Nong farmers have focused more on product quality, researching and applying standards and certifications such as organic, VietGAP, GlobalGAP... to ensure their products are of high quality, meeting strict market requirements.
Pepper has been one of the main crops of Dak Nong for many years. Dak Nong's pepper acreage and output are leading the country.

According to statistics from the Department of Agriculture, the pepper growing area of Dak Nong has stabilized at 34,000 hectares, with an average yield of about 2.4 tons/hectare, and a total annual output of about 70,000 tons.
Dak Nong has 547 hectares of pepper certified organically and about 332 hectares applying VietGAP process. This not only helps increase product value but also opens up great opportunities for Dak Nong to export pepper to demanding markets such as Europe and the US.
Regarding coffee, Dak Nong also achieved remarkable achievements when it ranked 3rd in the Central Highlands region in terms of area, with 141,000 hectares, with an estimated output of nearly 400,000 tons/year.
Dak Nong coffee is increasingly cultivated according to internationally recognized good agricultural practices. Many coffee growing regions in Dak Nong have favorable soil and climate conditions to develop high-value specialty coffee products.
This has prompted the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to approve a specialty coffee development program in Dak Mil district and the Dak Nong Provincial People's Committee has also issued a plan to develop specialty coffee by 2030.
Over the past years, the growth rate of Dak Nong province's agricultural sector has always been quite good, over 5.6%/year. Notably, in 2023, Dak Nong's agricultural sector achieved the highest growth rate ever, at 6.76%, higher than the 3.83% growth rate of the national agricultural sector.
Dak Nong's agricultural, forestry and fishery production value increased by VND 4,750 billion compared to 2020 (from VND 19,150 billion in 2020 to VND 23,900 billion in 2023).

The proportion of agriculture in the provincial economic structure has also shifted. Specifically, by 2023, agriculture will account for 39.96% of Dak Nong's economic structure.
This confirms that the agricultural sector is one of the strong pillars for the provincial economy. In fact, for many years, Dak Nong has also identified agriculture as one of the three economic pillars of the province.
According to Mr. Pham Tuan Anh, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, 2023 will not only be a successful year in terms of economy but also a year that creates an atmosphere of excitement and confidence in the future of the agricultural sector of Dak Nong province.
With the values that farmers, businesses and local authorities are striving to create, the future of Dak Nong agriculture will certainly be full of promise.

In general, the shift from agricultural production thinking to agricultural economics is an important step forward, helping Dak Nong farmers not only survive but also thrive in an increasingly demanding and competitive market.
The agricultural economic path in Dak Nong has been formed and is expected to become increasingly open. From there, it will help reshape the province's agricultural development strategy in the new period.
