Hair transplants, lasers, topical or oral medications can help hair grow back in bald areas of the scalp.

Baldness is a condition in which hair loss is severe, with less hair growing than falling out, leaving many areas of scalp bare, smooth, and hair follicles invisible.

Dr. Dang Thi Ngoc Bich, a dermatologist and cosmetic dermatologist at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, said that baldness can occur in both men and women, but it is more common in men and is related to genetic factors. Typical symptoms include thinning hair on the top of the head, with the hairline receding towards the back of the head in men, and thinning hair in women from the parting line.

Baldness can be treated and hair can grow back, according to doctors. Depending on the cause and condition of each person, doctors will advise and prescribe a suitable treatment regimen. Patients need to be patient and may have to try one or more types to achieve results.

Dr. Bich said there are 4 common baldness treatments including:

Oral or topical medications : The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved two medications to treat male pattern baldness: minoxidil and finasteride.

These medications are available as topical or oral medications and are recommended for daily use and require at least 3-4 months or a year to see results. Results also depend on how the medication is used and the dosage. Patients need to maintain long-term use of the medication. Hair loss will continue if the medication is stopped.

Hair transplant: This is an invasive medical procedure, there are two types of hair transplant to treat genetic baldness: follicular strip excision and follicular cluster extraction.

Follicular stripping involves removing a patch of scalp with healthy hair follicles (usually the back of the head, where hair is abundant). This skin is then divided into several small pieces and grafted onto the balding area.

Follicular unit extraction is done by removing healthy hair follicles from the scalp, then making small holes in the skin where hair loss is severe and implanting the hair follicles there. This results in even hair growth across the entire scalp.

Dr. Bich said that this method is effective in the long term, and hair grows naturally. However, patients may have to transplant multiple times while the cost is quite high and the treatment effectiveness depends a lot on the skill of the surgeon.

Low-energy laser: Using laser with extremely low energy pulses helps increase blood circulation in the scalp and stimulates hair follicle growth. According to Dr. Bich, this is a minimally invasive method, easy to perform and has very few side effects. Treatment effectiveness varies depending on each person's constitution. Laser helps stimulate the remaining hair follicles on the scalp but has no effect on lost hair follicles.

Treatment by microneedling or microinjection : Use a roller or pen to roll or inject micro-injections into the bald scalp. The injected drugs are hair growth stimulants, platelet-rich plasma or exosome stem cells (derived from endogenous cells in the body).

Dr. Bich noted that some baldness treatments may not be suitable for everyone and may cause allergic reactions. Patients should consult their doctor for specific advice.
