At the regular press conference of the second quarter of 2024 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on the afternoon of June 28, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said that with the results achieved in the first 6 months of the year, the export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products of the entire agricultural sector in 2024 will reach 54 billion USD, the level assigned by the Prime Minister.
Agriculture maintained a relatively high growth rate, affirming its role as a pillar of the economy; productivity and output of many key products increased, ensuring the supply of food, foodstuffs, and essential goods, making an important contribution to the growth of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
According to Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien, despite many difficulties, the market for agricultural, forestry and fishery products is still maintained and expanded, and agricultural, forestry and fishery exports continue to maintain high growth momentum.
Total export turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products in the first 6 months of the year reached 29.2 billion USD, up 19% over the same period last year. Meanwhile, total import turnover of agricultural, forestry and fishery products was about 20.92 billion USD.
Thus, the industry's trade surplus was about 8.28 billion USD, up 62.4%. Contributing to that result, there were 7 products and product groups with export value reaching over 1 billion USD: coffee, rubber, rice, vegetables, cashew nuts, shrimp, and wood products.
Recently, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) has made a recommendation on the procedures for issuing certificates of origin (S/C) of exploited aquatic products at fishing ports. In many places, it is taking a long time, even months, greatly affecting the production and export of goods.
Regarding this issue, Mr. Nhu Van Can, Deputy Director of the Department of Fisheries, said that due to errors, some localities have recently been more cautious in issuing certificates. This has increased the issuance time.
However, to overcome this situation and create favorable conditions for businesses, the Department of Fisheries has deployed electronic traceability software, organized training courses and deployed them in 28 coastal provinces and cities, especially for fishing port management boards, border guards, etc.
The deployment of electronic traceability software is highly appreciated by the European Commission (EC). Electronic traceability will also ensure reliability and transparency in the issuance of certificates as well as contribute to overcoming the EC's "Yellow Card" warning, Mr. Nhu Van Can shared.
Regarding the issue of some rice fields in Vi Thang commune, Vi Thuy district, Hau Giang province being affected by salinity, Mr. Nguyen Nhu Cuong, Director of the Department of Crop Production, said that the report of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hau Giang province showed that in the 2023-2024 Winter-Spring crop and the Summer-Autumn crop, about 2 hectares were affected by salinity and in the same location. The salinity-affected rice fields are close to the highway construction area.
To assess the damage in the Summer-Autumn crop, we need to wait until the end of the crop. Regarding determining the cause, Mr. Nguyen Nhu Cuong said that this is a difficult problem, requiring a systematic and comprehensive assessment. This determination takes time.
Mr. Nguyen Nhu Cuong emphasized: “If they use sea sand, it is necessary to evaluate not only this area but also other areas to make a general and comprehensive assessment. This assessment requires the participation of research agencies and scientists.”
