Specifically, according to the benchmark scores for grade 10 admission in the 2024-2025 school year announced by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, Doan Ket - Hai Ba Trung High School's benchmark score this year has surprisingly decreased to only 23.75 points; last year, this school's benchmark score was 40. The score reduction is up to 16.25 points.
This year, Doan Ket - Hai Ba Trung High School has a strange drop in the standard score, up to more than 16 points.
In 2023, this school was originally a mid-ranked school, but last year's benchmark score jumped to a level approaching that of the top schools, with a benchmark score in the "top 4" (in 2022 it was 38.25 points). This caused many students to choose their first choice to go to a top school and their second choice to go to this school, leading to failure in both choices.
Perhaps that is why this year students and parents have the mentality of "avoiding" this school when registering for admission, leading to the number of first-choice applications to the school being lower than the assigned enrollment quota.
Specifically, the school's enrollment target this year is still the same as in 2023, which is 675, but the number of first-choice applicants to the school is only 551 (the competition ratio is 0.82).
In addition, many top schools this year also decreased their scores. Chu Van An High School had the highest standard score of 44 points last year, but this year it decreased to 42.5 points; Kim Lien High School decreased by 2.5 points, Tran Phu High School also decreased by 2.25 points, Viet Duc High School decreased by 1.75 points, Phan Dinh Phung High School decreased by 1 point, Pham Hong Thai High School decreased by 3.5 points...
Thang Long High School is one of the few top schools this year with an increased admission score compared to last year. Specifically, last year this school took 41 points, this year it is 42.25 points. Yen Hoa High School is the school with the highest competition rate this year (1/3), this year still maintains the same admission score as last year at 42.25 points; Le Quy Don - Ha Dong High School and Nhan Chinh High School also increased slightly by 0.25 points compared to last year.
Top schools with the same standard scores as last year include Nguyen Gia Thieu High School, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School, Xuan Dinh High School... These schools are all located in the suburbs of Hanoi.
Top schools "break out"
While the top schools and many middle-ranking schools all saw their admission scores decrease, many lower-ranking schools recorded significant increases. Among them, Bat Bat High School, which had a admission score of only 17 points in 2023, increased by 8 points this year, up to 25 points.
Other schools in suburban districts such as Bac Luong Son High School and Luu Hoang High School increased by 3 points (from 17 to 20 points); many schools increased by 1-2 points such as Hai Ba Trung High School - Thach That, Phung Khac Khoan High School - Thach That, Hoai Duc A High School, Hoai Duc B High School, Hoai Duc C High School, Van Xuan High School - Hoai Duc, Ngo Quyen High School - Ba Vi...
High schools in other suburban admission areas in Gia Lam District and Long Bien District also recorded very little increase or decrease in standard scores, unchanged compared to last year.
From July 3 to 8, secondary schools will receive applications for review of students' exam results (if any). On July 10, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training will meet and approve additional benchmark scores for both specialized and non-specialized high schools (if any).
The Hanoi Department of Education and Training notes the principles for admission to grade 10 public high schools as follows: students who pass their first choice will not be considered for their second or third choices. Students who fail their first choice will be considered for their second choice but must have an admission score at least 1 point higher than the school's first choice admission standard.
Students who do not pass their first and second choices can be considered for their third choice but must have an admission score at least 2 points higher than the school's admission score for their first choice.
When the admission score is lowered, public high schools are allowed to admit students with second and third wishes who meet the admission requirements.
