Vingroup Corporation has just sent a document to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee proposing an investment plan for a high-speed urban railway connecting the center of Ho Chi Minh City with Can Gio district (Ho Chi Minh City - Can Gio metro).
According to preliminary research, the HCMC - Can Gio metro line has a total investment of about VND102,370 billion (USD4.09 billion) passing through District 7, Nha Be and Can Gio districts.
Specifically, the starting point of the route is at Nguyen Van Linh Street (between the intersection with Nguyen Thi Thap Street and Ly Thuc Man Street), Tan Phu Ward, District 7. The end point of the route is at a 39-hectare land plot adjacent to the Can Gio coastal urban tourism project, Long Hoa Commune, Can Gio District.
The project is designed according to double-track standards with a gauge of 1,435 mm, the entire elevated route with a total length of 48.5 km. The infrastructure is built to meet the operating speed of 250 km/h, axle load of 17 tons. Two depots are expected to be located in District 7 on a 20-hectare plot of land and a 39-hectare plot of land, Long Hoa commune, Can Gio district.
Regarding passenger transport capacity, the high-speed railway will meet the transport capacity of 30,000 - 40,000 people/one way/hour.
The investor plans to implement the project in the form of a public-private partnership, using the Build-Own-Operate (BOO) contract. Vingroup will invest in the construction using its own capital and capital mobilized in accordance with the law, own and exploit and operate the project after completion.
The project is expected to be constructed from 2026-2027, and will be tested and handed over in 2028.
On January 4, at the conference announcing the Ho Chi Minh City Planning, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh said he had asked Vingroup to build a subway system from the city center to Can Gio district.
Government leaders also suggested that Ho Chi Minh City should assign more work to large enterprises to create new motivations and resources to promote development.
Ho Chi Minh City aims to complete 7 metro lines with a total length of 355 km by 2035 (including the Ben Thanh - Suoi Tien metro extension and lines 2 to 7).
In the following 10 years, lines 8, 9 and 10 were also built and completed. The total investment for these 10 metro lines is estimated at about 67 billion USD.
