TPO - The Vietnam Railway Authority - Ministry of Transport has just proposed to the competent authority to allocate 425 billion VND to repair the two railway bridges Long Bien and Phu Luong because they have seriously degraded.
The Vietnam Railway Authority has just sent a report to the Ministry of Transport proposing solutions to overcome the weak points of degradation. In particular, the Authority proposed to establish a project to renovate and repair Long Bien Bridge (Hanoi - Dong Dang railway line) and Phu Luong Bridge (Gia Lam - Hai Phong railway line).
According to the Vietnam Railway Authority, after more than 120 years of operation, Long Bien Bridge has seriously degraded and needs to be repaired soon to ensure train safety.
In 2014, the Prime Minister assigned Vietnam Railway Corporation as the investor of the Long Bien Bridge restoration project, phase 1 of which is to reinforce and ensure the safety of Long Bien Bridge for railway transport until 2025, with a total investment of nearly 250 billion VND.
In 2023, the project was inspected and assessed for structural condition, including some structures that did not ensure stable conditions.

Vietnam Railways Department recommends that the current situation should be carefully assessed and the possibility of long-term investment should be considered to ensure safe operation with development investment capital before the Hanoi urban railway line No. 1 is implemented and before the Eastern belt railway line is implemented; it is proposed to replace and reinforce the main truss system, bridge deck girder system, and lower longitudinal connection system for the French girder system; and to prevent rust on the upper plated surface and the joint position of the bottom of the sleeper on the opposite span T66.
Long Bien Bridge will have some parts of the supporting structure and the rusty steel auxiliary piers replaced; the steel pile structure at the auxiliary piers on the bridge will be reinforced, repaired and rust-proofed.
At Phu Luong Bridge, according to the Vietnam Railway Authority, after a long period of use, many steel structures of the bridge have rusted and deteriorated, affecting the load-bearing capacity of the structure. The connections between the longitudinal beams and the transverse beams using rivets and bolts are rusted and loose.
At the same time, the longitudinal beams, cross beams and truss system were rusted and punctured in many places. At the position where the truncated vertical bar connected to the cross beam, there was rust and puncture, leading to a displacement of 50 mm from the original position.
Vietnam Railways proposed to rebuild the bridge with a span of 5x75 m, then soon have a plan to renovate and repair it using medium-term public investment capital.
The total investment for the two projects is expected to be 425 billion VND, from public investment capital for the 2026-2031 period.
