To "survive" the first year of college...

The 2005 students have officially entered the lecture hall. The university environment is very different from high school. What should students pay special attention to so that their first year of university becomes an exciting and successful start?

The trap of freedom

One of the “dreams come true” when entering university is to “escape” the family's time management, especially for new students who live far from home.

University teachers (even if they have the title of academic advisor or homeroom teacher) do not manage students as tightly as high school teachers.

Furthermore, with familiar arguments such as “18 years old is an adult”, “18 years old is responsible before the law”, young men and women are more confident in embarking on the journey of “finding freedom”. Many energetic plans have been proposed, mainly to realize the aspirations of their student days.

However, besides scientific schedules, balancing between studying, relaxing and exercising, or useful plans such as registering for short-term courses/topics, joining skill clubs, improving foreign language skills, it is not uncommon for students to indulge in satisfying temporary passions, neglect studying, and neglect improving their skill capital.

Perhaps, we should know one more piece of information: every year, there are many new students enrolling, but at the same time, there are also many students who reserve their study results, drop out of school halfway for many reasons.

One of them is because you have not been able to control your own playfulness and laziness. Don't let the trap of freedom take over.

Take time to explore the city, travel around, experience the joys of youth, but remember to keep learning at the center of all activities.

Passionately and tirelessly pursuing new knowledge is the most important path in this stage. The bright future is due to the accumulation of darkness and silent efforts of the present.

Work smarter

Gone are the days when society heatedly debated whether students should work part-time and how part-time work affects and impacts students' learning process.

In reality, it seems that the rate of students working part-time is increasing year by year, in both private and public schools.

If in the past, the main reason why students decided to find a part-time job was to earn extra income to cover tuition fees and living expenses; today, the reasons are much more diverse.

Discovering one's own abilities, enhancing communication skills, perfecting teamwork skills, bringing closer to the practical environment of learned theories, experiencing the office environment, connecting with future career opportunities, building personal brands, indulging creative passions... are a series of benefits that students today get from working part-time.

In addition, an advantage of today's students is that the information and communication space in general, and social networks in particular, is more open than ever. This has made the process of doing extra work easier and more convenient.

However, the other side of reality also shows that many students mistakenly believe that temporary success in the process of working part-time is the criterion and measure of success compared to the goal of completing the university program.

Sustainable success requires a solid foundation of knowledge - something that universities provide to students scientifically, through a system of carefully designed training programs, clear accreditation and a team of lecturers with extensive experience in school and profession.

We should not be too quick to get caught up in stories of “dropping out of college and starting a successful business”. Such cases do exist, but they are not many, if not a minority.

Consider carefully, so as not to feel regretful about a university journey with many expectations and efforts.
