The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) has been adjusted to a deadline of 30 December 2025 for large businesses and 30 June 2026 for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises.

From this point on, businesses will not be able to export coffee and other agricultural products to the European market if they cannot prove that the products are not related to deforestation after December 31, 2020.

Dak Nong is one of the key coffee export areas of Vietnam. Dak Nong has the third largest coffee area in the country after Dak Lak and Lam Dong, with 143,000 hectares, and a harvested area of 131,000 hectares. Coffee accounts for 37% of the province's cultivated area, with an output of 360,000 tons/year.

Dak Nong has about 70,000 coffee growing households. Currently, the province's coffee products are exported to dozens of countries, with an output of about 120,000 tons/year, so compliance with EUDR is urgent.

In 2024, the export turnover of coffee products will reach 280 million USD, an increase of 70.6% compared to 2023. Coffee products account for about 28% of the total export turnover of Dak Nong province, so compliance with EUDR is urgent.

The implementation of EUDR regulations still faces many difficulties and challenges for the Dak Nong coffee industry. First of all, the guidance documents and documents related to EUDR are limited; the database on forests and growing areas is not synchronized and detailed down to each plot and garden.

Traceability and registration of growing area codes are facing many difficulties. The participation and support of relevant parties in implementing EUDR is still low.

Coffee purchasing and exporting enterprises still have many limitations; resources and techniques to implement necessary intervention contents and solutions of the province are facing difficulties.

According to Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Pham Tuan Anh, Dak Nong has promoted proactiveness, accompanying businesses inside and outside the province to find the most optimal direction for challenges and difficulties from EUDR.

At the same time, the province mobilizes resources from businesses to better meet sustainable economic, environmental and social requirements in the key coffee industry.

Mr. Nguyen Tien Dung, Director of Agricultural Development, Simexco Dak Lak Import-Export MVT Company Limited, said: Dak Nong enterprises should be more active in participating in EUDR-related activities of governments, associations, and international organizations to have the most optimal actions.

In particular, what businesses want and especially want is to have specific, accurate and non-duplicated data to meet the 8 main contents and conditions of EUDR on coordinates, origin, labor, and agreements. The initiative and support of Dak Nong province is very meaningful.

In addition to enterprises outside the province, Dak Nong currently has 13 enterprises in the province and 12 cooperatives serving coffee exports. According to Mr. Truong Cong Toan, Director of Toan Hang Private Enterprise, Dak R'lap District (Dak Nong), for many years now the unit has linked up and produced coffee according to 4C standards for export.

To have a stable production area and standard raw materials, the enterprise is cooperating with nearly 11,000 surrounding farming households, with a cultivated area of 1,500 hectares of coffee.

To meet the EUDR principles, it is necessary to coordinate with relevant parties in building a database including coordinates and maps of large plots.

This is the most important content in the dossier when exporting coffee to the EU. In addition, it is necessary to communicate to raise awareness so that producers comply with the principles of EUDR. These activities, in addition to the resources of the enterprise, need the cooperation and support of the government and related parties.
