“On Earth Day, I’m going to plant chili peppers,” a three-second video posted on the US Embassy in Vietnam’s Facebook page shows Mr. Knapper saying while holding a pot of chili peppers.

In the video above, Ambassador Knapper used the similar pronunciation of the two phrases “Earth Day” in English and “ỵt ngày” in Vietnamese, aiming to support the Earth Day movement to raise awareness and value of the natural environment.

This is just one of many times Ambassador Knapper has humorously used Vietnamese since he took on the role of US diplomatic representative in Vietnam. For Mr. Knapper, speaking Vietnamese is very important “so that I can work here.”
