The initiative was launched in the context that play is an essential need of people of all ages and has special significance for the comprehensive development of children. However, this activity has not really been recognized and given due attention in the face of the impacts of major trends and changes in society.
A total of 138 countries in all regions have co-sponsored the Resolution, including Bulgaria, El Salvador, Jamaica, Kenya, and Luxembourg, who have co-authored it with Vietnam. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) welcomed this very meaningful International Day and affirmed that they will actively participate in contributing to the commemorative activities in the spirit of the Resolution.

The resolution calls on all Member States and organs of the United Nations system as well as other relevant stakeholders, including non-governmental organizations, research institutions and the private sector, to celebrate this day to raise awareness of the importance of play in social life.
Speaking to introduce the Resolution to the General Assembly, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, highlighted the role and significance of play in human development and social life. The Ambassador emphasized that play is the fundamental foundation for human development at all ages. Play helps people overcome social and cultural barriers to explore, learn and connect, promote creativity and innovation, and contribute to the comprehensive mental and physical development of children, the future generation of humanity. In addition, play also promotes a culture of dialogue, solidarity and cooperation, contributing to preventing conflicts and building peace.
On this occasion, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang thanked the active participation and support of the United Nations member states and hoped that this initiative would continue to spread, contributing to maximizing human potential and promoting the commitment to implementing the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
According to the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, the Resolution on International Day of Play not only marks an important step forward in raising awareness of children’s rights globally but also has special significance for Vietnamese children. Having an additional international holiday in June - “Month of Action for Vietnamese Children” - will make activities to protect children’s rights in Vietnam more meaningful and practical. |
