Ice cubes mixed with spices and chili powder, grilled over hot coals and eaten as a snack are becoming a hit in China.

Grilled chilli-coated ice cubes are a new street food in China, known and quickly spread online thanks to a 9-second video showing how to prepare them at a street stall in Nanchang, Jiangxi province.

Accordingly, the chef places ice cubes on an iron grill, with hot coals underneath, sprinkles white salt, butter, chili powder and stirs well before serving. The dish is said to help cool down in the hot summer weather because the seasoned ice cubes have not completely melted.

Grilled ice - strange street food in China

The owner came up with the idea of grilling ice on a hot day. At first, the dish was just a joke but it was wildly popular. Therefore, the owner continued to grill ice. The dish was free and attracted many locals and tourists who wanted to try it.

Previously, China also made the world's tourists excited with the dish of stir-fried pebbles with chili or soudiu. The dish originated from the eastern province of Hubei. The chef uses small pebbles of the right size, washes them, drains them, then puts them in a pan of hot oil and stir-fries them with garlic, chopped chili and sauce. According to CNN, this is probably the hardest dish in the world, literally.

Soudiu, which has gone viral online, is not a new dish. It has been around for hundreds of years. In the past, boatmen would sometimes run out of food while making deliveries and would pick up rocks from the riverbed and cook them with spices. The boatmen jokingly called the dish “finding happiness in bitterness” (because of its spicy taste).
